As with all games that feature dwarves, I naturally chose Gilius. On with the review! Controls are average. They can be sluggish sometimes but that's just the nature of old games. There isn't any room for strategy, and many enemy attacks are close to unavoidable. The below average music being interrupted by the ear grating AAUUGGHHH death sound gets very annoying, VERY fast.
On to some positives, the gameplay is challenging and fun. The dinosaur riding aspects are fun enough, but feel half baked at their core. The flow of gameplay is enjoyable enough, but hasn't aged very well. The range of attacks is mediocre at best, and the bosses are very lackluster.
I can see why it was popular at release, but this just hasn't aged well enough for me to recommend spending your valuable time on it. Maybe if you're interested in the history of Bmup's you should check it out, but it's ultimately a teeny bit above average, but only by myabe a bunny hop or two. I'll give it a 'good' 6/10. And that's being generous.
I get how this would be appealing in 1989. I still had fun with it, but it was very clunky. I suppose if I sat down to master it I may appreciate this more but I would honestly rather move on to a better beat em up. Not a big fan of the friendly fire, which only made combat feel more clunky as you try to avoid your friend.
The graphics were pretty good though even if the gameplay was very simplistic.
Pretty much everyone mentioned all of the game's flaws. to sum it up; it's not bad, it aged, nice graphics, but I find the clunky-ness of the controls are what makes this game a tad difficult, because otherwise it's easy AF.
As everyone knows, Golden Axes is a Classic. In spite of this, I did not totally enjoy this game. Don't get me wrong, the game is an okay beat em up but it felt clunky. Also, the final boss was way to hard to beat, but I guess, that is expected with retro games.
Decent beat em up. Kinda clunky and frustrating though until you figure out some good strats and cheese.
You'll want to try out the different characters. Jump + attack does a very powerful backwards attack. It took me a long time to figure that move out, not having the manual.
If you've never played golden Axe, I'd skip this and jump to Golden Axe 2 which is better.
Segan beat-em-up-klassikko on ihan jees peli edelleen. Kuitenkin ehkä hieman jäykähkön ja vaisun oloinen ollakseen edelleen päräyttävä, etenkin kun vertaa Segan toiseen mätkyttelysarjaan, Streets of Rageen. Joillekin barbarismi ja nahkakalsarit silti kolajavat kovempaa.
I played this game long long ago in the megadrive of a friend. How many beautiful afternoons fighting together and competing for the candies/jars! But actually I don't remember finishing it at that time (I did not have this console myself) Well, today I did it and I enjoyed it even more than 20 years ago! :) It is super short! I will continue with the second one very soon.
Overall this is a pretty nice-looking (and sounding) game for the genesis, ported from arcade. I think it actualyl looks better on the Genesis! It has a brighter, more colorful palllette. The sound is also pretty good. It controls ok, but there are so many gotchas in this that have nothing to do with the controls!
The good news is you can lure enemies into falling into pits (even bosses!) and they dont come back, the bad news is you also die if you fall in one by mistake. I managed to lose my first game getting to the final level and then fallling into the games first jumping puzzle pit... losing my last two lives in seconds. Overall the game isnt hard, the final boss is a real doozy though. you'll have to Master the Jump Attack, it is the only way to fight at times, and if you spam it you can cheeseball bosses, (including the ultimate boss!) I picked the dwarf with the axe, it asn't golden, but an axe is an axe.
The trouble with this game that holds it back from being better is the way enemies fight is kinda cheap. The game is designed …

The trouble with this game that holds it back from being better is the way enemies fight is kinda cheap. The game is designed from a quarter-stealing machine though, so i guess that makes sense... Enemies tend to go at you from both ends, leaving you vulnerable, and as soon as an enemy hits you, 99% you are going to receive all of their follow up moves because the game stun locks you (and enemies too) so you are really at a disadvantage fighting multiple enemies. enemies also have a tendency to charge and attack you. evading this is hard, seeing it coming is impossible (they will start the charge at different distances) a jump attack can work if you can somehow time it perfectly,, but its best to just avoid it.
your magic 'bomb' is interesting. best i can tell the more you have the stronger it is. you use them for bosses obviously. It looks visually appealing but its hard to even tell how much damage it does, i just hoped it made the fight easier.
oh you also have dinosaurs which you ride and fight with. This is mostly annoying because since you are always fighting multiple enemies, its more of trying to stop the enemy from getting onto the dinosaur to take you out, since it seems they fight better on the dinos than you can. still, capturing a dino to fight the boss with is helpful, as they have decent range, one is even a ranged attack of spitting fireballs!
In Conclusion this port could have stayed in the arcades where it belonged, however its a very nice looking (and sounding) genesis game, with okay controls, just not the best beat em up mechanics with its many 'aha!' moments and pit-falling frustrations.

As I sneak away from my handheld post, hoping that the Well-Red Mage doesn’t notice my absence, I’m debating what game to play. The game I’m craving is Golden Axe. Maybe it’s my recent trip to Cornwall, full of beaches, castles, fields, rocks and sea. Maybe it’s because I recently played its (disappointing) sequel. Maybe it’s because I’m a Sega kid who misses the arcades. Maybe because Golden Axe is such a much loved game, to us Europeans anyway.
Those of us who grew up with Sega in the 90’s adored Golden Axe – any conversation I have about the Mega Drive usually features the question “Do you remember Golden Axe?” I’d argue that Golden Axe is one of the most fondly remembered Mega Drive games, after Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2.
The question I find myself asking now is “Does Golden Axe deserve that love?” Is it just nostalgia playing tricks with us or does Golden Axe still have something to …

“I had a feeling that arcade games should be competitive against the great hit console title Dragon Quest (created by Enix) and therefore studied the world of magic and swords, combined this with the gameplay of Double Dragon, and finally came up with the concept of Golden Axe.” -Makota Uchida, interview with Retro Gamer, 2014
You can’t tell the story of Golden Axe without first mentioning Double Dragon. Technos Japan’s 1987 arcade brawler was a revelation at the time. Double Dragon took the concept of Technos’ earlier game Renegade further, adding a simultaneous two player mode plus different weapons and moves to the action. So when Makota Uchida’s AM1 team were asked to begin work on a new game towards the end of Altered Beast’s development, the new game in question was to be Sega’s answer to Double Dragon. Uchida knew he had to develop a different game than Double Dragon, feeling he couldn’t compete with the more experienced Technos team (Altered Beast was Uchida’s first project). Wisely, Uchida looked at Double Dragon and kept the assets that made Billy and Jimmy Lee’s game a hit – the 2.5D perspective, two player mode and the variety of attacks – and decided to add a unique feel to his new game.

My boyfriend and I decided to take a tour of the Golden Axe franchise. We got to stage 5 and died before giving up. A little slow, too hard, too repetitive. I think the big killer here is lack of health power ups.
Preliminary: (Playing the original arcade version, not the Genesis version) I really wanna see the ending cuz I read it breaks the 4th wall in a cute way, but not a fan of this anti-drug message at the start and usually not a big brawler/hack and slash fan. They better grow on me cuz lord knows the early 90s sure loved hack n slash games. Plus, I played some port of this or a later Golden Axe a lot for the PS1 PS2 or Dreamcast can't recall which, and I'd always pick the woman or the dwarf. And I played a later arcade game in this series too.
As beautiful as this was, and I was loving the woman character I picked, I am immediately so disappointed by the collision masks and the usual issue I have with brawlers--exploiting the game's iffy manifestation of "depth." The Golden Axe I remember was top-down or close to it. Welp, sadly, ending this one early. May return to it when I have a group to play it with, but it felt very blah at the beginning (the controls were responsive, at least)

Girlfriend and I beat it on MAME. A great classic.
Nunca he entendido su fama: Es tosco, repetitivo y soso.
Played this arcade game all the way through with my boyfriend at Starfighters Arcade. I played as the Dwarf. It's fun beat 'em up game, but it was a lot shorter than I was expecting. Still glad we managed to beat it. The ending was pretty funny.
