Satisfying Scrubbing With a Side of Sadness *

This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Undusted: Letters from the Past feels like a cross between Unpacking and Powerwash Simulator. Funny enough, I have yet to play either of those, but I've seen enough of both to say that this seems like an excellent blend of the two. Gameplay mostly consists of cleaning household items with a scrub sponge and toothbrush (plus a couple other tools) while following the accompanying story.

Items often have buttons and more that you can interact with

Scrubbing the various items Adora pulls from boxes in her parents' old house is its own reward as you reveal what's under all that dust. Cleaning sessions are bookended with short little narrative segments that give some background on each item and its significance to her. It makes for a sweet little gameplay loop where you can put the game down in between cleaning items to pick up and continue another time. Most items also have fun little interactive elements and sounds as you tilt them around. What I thought was very smart was that you have to play with them a little bit to fully clean them; for example having to pop open the tape recorder by pressing the button on top so you can scrub the inside.

The story isn't anything super involved but it managed to tug a bit at my heartstrings regardless. The artwork is very pretty and pairs well with each tidbit of the plot. Those who have played Venba will find something similar here as far as narrative structure. It does end on a bit of a depressing note for an otherwise cozy game, but I don't personally feel it works to the game's detriment. Some may, I suppose.

The story has depressing moments involving the parents but these add a touch of realism

Definitely check this out if a short game about tidying seems it …

Definitely check this out if a short game about tidying seems it would appeal to you! I played most of it on Steam Deck and had no issues whatsoever. The achievements are also very doable for any completionists out there. I grabbed them all without too much extra effort after seeing the credits.

The end screen has a key that you cleaned

Un problème de mécanique centrale *

This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version
