Intro

Mirthwood is a farming game in which you build up a farm, improve your skills and equipment, do simple quests and fight enemies.

The Good

  • Cute graphics.
  • The monsters and bandits give this a very different atmosphere compared to similar games.
  • There's a single, fairly big, open map.

The Bad

  • Melee combat is incredibly clunky and bad. You'll end up just using your bow.
  • Resources including trees and rocks regrow on your plot. It can never look like you want to.
  • Balance seems pretty bad. After ~5 hours i finally had enough gold (750) to buy a tool upgrade kit. Turns out it only works on a single tool. And i needed more iron than i had acquired in the game so far. There are five tools with four upgrades costing 53.750 gold total.
  • Also there's weapons and armor that can be crafted/upgraded.
  • And even decorative elements are weirdly expensive in terms of resources.
  • Enemies will sometimes chase you relentlessly and one spawns right next to the fast travel point in a camp.
  • You basically have to guess where you fast travel to because half the points have vague names and you can't just select from a map.

The Ugly

  • Optimisation seems non-existent. The game regularly lags and becomes almost unplayable when it snows. Even reducing the settings to 1K/High/no shadows had no noticable effect. For comparison, i can run Horizon Forbidden West in 4K Ultra with 0 problems.
  • I've had (at least) four crashes in 5,5 hours. Fast travelling back to the farm caused (at least) three of these. This is especially bad because...

  • This is a "cosy" game. In other words, a fairly casual game that you want to play while listening to music/videos. But there's only a single volume slider. And you can only rebind about 10 keys and the entire options menu is pretty barren:

Conclusion

I was actually going to post a status update as a warning about the "ugly" parts of the game but while writing it i realised i was actually done with Mirthwood. This is not an early access game, it just released for €25 while clearly being unfinished. And this is after earlier delays. Apparently the game only has two developers too so who knows if this ever gets fixed. And that's a shame because this definitely has potential.

Mirthwood is pretty, and I appreciate that it's a very different take from many of the other sandbox survival RPGs on the market, but it is another sandbox survival RPG and it's a genre that needs a really great hook to reel me in. I think this is going to find a fanbase, and deservedly so because it's a really neat package.
