It's a top down action shooter. You can move and shoot in 8 directions. When you keep holding down the shooting button the shooting direction stays fixed while you can still move in all directions, which is pretty neat, and is the best control option I've seen in these kind of games, next to actually having a twin-stick shooter. Also you have a dodge button to roll to the sides. Levels are linear but some parts are vertical, some are horizontal scrolling. What additionally heightens the replay value is that you can choose the route to the final boss, meaning on one playthrough you won't see all the levels.
Difficulty:
It's not overly hard, I think it's quite a bit easier than things like Metal Slug. No one hit deaths either, and respawning on the spot you died.
This game makes for a good party game with two players. It's for some unexplicable reason much better than its sequel in every aspect.
