The final King of Fighters game released by SNK in its original state, The King of Fighters 2000 expands on the story and gameplay presented in The King of Fighters '99. This year's tournament is sponsored by the Ikari Warriors in an attempt to discover more about the NESTS organization, and to derail the plans of potential NESTS agents K' and Maxima. The King of Fighters 2000 features an improved Striker call system with the Active Striker System, which allows the player to call his Striker character in any situation, whether he is attacking or being attacked by the opponent, allowing him to use their strikers in combos. Moreover, in addition to the numerous nostalgic SNK characters returning as Another and Maniac Strikers, KOF 2000 welcomes newcomers such as Ramon, Vanessa, Seth, Lin, Hinako Shijo, and Kula Diamond. Maybe not THE King...
This review is for the PlayStation 2 version

King of Fighters 2000 is the SEVENTH instalment in the series, but the very first one for me. I played the PS2 version and I have to say that it's a pretty solid fighter offering plenty of cool characters, kick ass tunes and wacky, colourful stages. It's an arcade adaptation and the stupid difficulty that comes with that...you either choose two fighters or a team of four that you then tag in and out between as you try to beat all six opponents.

Many fighters are similar when it comes to moves and animations, but there's enough variety in their characteristics and special attacks to keep you entertained. I didn't dedicate my life to KoF2k or anything, but it was fun and challenging enough while it lasted, and I will definitely keep an eye out for other 'King of Fighter's as I go through the Playstation library.

I am never going to get any good at any fighting game. But I do like to play them from time to time, just to mess around in. King of Fighters is a great series, with lots of memorable characters and some excellent pixel art. The main gimmick in this one is the "Striker" system, in which your character can call in another character to assist with an attack, and timing that right with your combos can deal your opponent some extra damage. Some of these Striker characters are from other SNK fighting games, which is fun to see. This is definitely a game that will take time to get any good at though, and was one of many KoF titles released around that time (one a year, for several years more or less). From what I've heard, this one was much more unbalanced compared to other years.
