Twinkle Star Sprites is a 1996 competitive scrolling shooter arcade game originally created by ADK. It was ADK's last production for the Neo-Geo platform. The gameplay, which can be characterized as a combination of a fixed shooter and a versus puzzle game, uses combinations of shots, as well as timed power-ups to attempt to damage the opponent. These attacks also serve as counters to the opponent's attack.

This is an interesting sort of shooter, in that you're playing against someone (either a friend or the computer AI). Projectiles fly into your side of the screen, and you try to shoot them so that they fly into our opponent's side of the screen (and hopefully make the kill). I think the concept is A+ but the execution is a bit lacking. The levels themselves end up not being that interesting, and I quickly grew tired of hearing the charge-up noise for bigger shots (vital when you have lots of bigger projectiles flying toward you). There was also a lot of slow-down in each version I played, which made it all less fun.

It is still pretty fun though, and I imagine would be best-enjoyed playing against a friend who was also into the genre. I'm surprised I haven't really ever noticed a newer iteration of this concept. Seems like something some indie studio really ought to go for, really polish it up and have it all play smoothly, have online tournament modes and whatnot.

Puyo Puyo meets shoot 'em ups (or cute 'em ups if you prefer)

Twinkle Star Sprites is the Puyo Puyo formula combined with the shoot 'em up genre and it works like a dream. The screen is split just like Puyo Puyo but the gameplay is obviously more akin to TwinBee. As you destroy things on your own screen you send fireballs, monsters, and even bosses over to your opponents screen. This results …

This results in some super addicting and competitive arcade matches that can end as quickly as 30 seconds. The visuals are cute and it has a few bangers in the soundtrack as well. If you have a friend to play with (and even if you don't) I highly recommend this title.
