Mega Man is a side-scrolling platform game. It differs greatly from the earlier console release, with only three bosses and not very many extras to find. Originally intended to be an official part of the franchise, the game was panned for its low quality.

FredLobster's review of Mega Man

This is NOT the classic NES action platformer Mega Man. This is instead a crappy sequel made by a different company with godawful controls and lame level design. It's probably for the best that you ignore this one and pretend it's not part of the canon (Wikipedia seems to).

I remember renting this game after having played Mega Man 3 or 4. I was pissed that the charge up ability didn't work in the first game. You only could should pellets which made this game more difficult than its sequels. I think I rented this 2 or 3 times when I was a kid. I beat several of the bosses but I don't think I ever rapped the game.
