You may recall my boyfriend and I are generally telling each other what games to play next. I gave him Phantasy Star 4, and it takes him forever to get through something, so in the meantime, I thought I'd replay 2 & 3. Since I have save states and fast forward, I'm playing all 4 offspring in PS3. This is such a weird game. It almost gets it. I think I would have been happier if the game was just PS2-but-better, but they reinvented the wheel and downgraded the experience in a lot of ways. I would say PS3 improved the menus a bit, gave us a glimpse of what would be the manga-style storytelling in 4, and sped combat up a little? Otherwise, kind of a step backwards in every way. It's too bad they ended the series with 4, because that's when all the pieces finally came together. Lively locales and villages with NPCs, enjoyable dungeons that weren't too crazy, a good story, smooth and fun combat, awesome visuals, travel that didn't make me want to die...
Right now, one of the weirdest bits I'm realizing in PS3 is how EMPTY everything is. I get how that relates in-universe-wise, but there's just village after identical village, many of which are literally devoid of people except for shops. Some of this happens for story reasons, but jesus, why even bother putting some of these houses in town if there's nothing in it but a couple of chairs and beds?? Bizarre.
