A short (7 Acts) must-play game on the Genesis / Megadrive

While time hasn't been kind to some design choices ("challenging" and "unfair" doesn't mean the same thing, game developers) and I had to freely use savestates and the level select to not waste too much time doing the same thing over and over again, it's fun enough to play!

The more I kept on going with this game, it felt very frustrating. I didn't have fun on the first playthrough at ALL. to put it simply: "The game felt Dated".
The Controls feel way beyond Basic to just (Jump) on all buttons, Sonic didn't feel as fast, and the concept of Speed is not well represented in this game with too many slow downs and a lot of run and stop happening in the later Acts.
After beating the game and gotten frustrated from it, I took a small break and came back to replay it (Casually this time).
Still couldn't handle the Basic controls, but the level design and the concept of this game started to be fun despite all of it's flaws. The moment I got the sequels out of the way and played the game As it is, It's not that bad. (I still got annoyed with the lack of spin-dash)
Then I put It in comparison again but this time with Super Mario Bros. Funny how I managed to enjoy Super Mario Bros. way more than this game to the point that Super Mario Bros. was way ahead of it's time in terms of controls in 1985, than it was for Sonic.
Moral of the story is: If you want to play this game, Just finish Green Hill Zone acts and move on. Don't complete the rest of the game.

Sonic The Hedgehog was made to combat the success of the Nintendo Entertainment System and their mascot, Super Mario. Their mascot at the time was Alex Kidd which obviously wasn't doing very well to fight Nintendo and their plumber. So they decided to make a new mascot. A mascot that exuded 90's energy. Thus the blue blur, Sonic The Hedgehog was born and it was an immediate success. This led to the famous marketing campaign, "Sega does what Nintendon't". At the time, Sonic vs. Mario was an actual valid argument.
Now has the game aged well? Kinda...
The main gimmick and selling point of Sonic The Hedgehog (1991) is speed. The game is all about gaining momentum and beating the level as fast as possible. Make less mistakes and you might beat the level faster.
Now, unfortunately, after Green Hill Zone (One of the most famous and perfect 2D levels to ever exist), The zones don't really let you go too fast and they are just trial and error until you get through the Acts which there are 3 each in this one which can bog the pacing down (Ironic).
The Special Stages are also awful but I was able to get the 6 (?) Chaos Emeralds anyways which just gives you an alternate ending.
The game is still fun but it's mainly just setting the groundwork for Sonic The Hedgehog 2 which is far better.
Sonic The Hedgehog (1991) is a nice commodity but it aged a little poorly. Can't wait to play through Sonic The Hedgehog 2 which is considered better in every way

The one that started it all. It's my least favorite in the classic trilogy, but I can't deny its impact. I enjoy half the levels in this game while the others kind of drag for me. Best thing about this game is the soundtrack!

People love to give the Sonic franchise crap, and for understandable reason, but I legitimately enjoy the originals, and even if they're silly and poorly designed I've even gotten some enjoyment out of some newer ones. I would've definitely been a SNES kid but the Sonic games knew how to take advantage of the Genesis hardware for a great look and sound. The iOS version saves after you beat each level, and I'm pretty sure that's not how the original version worked, but on the other hand I was playing on a touch screen. Also I didn't get the chaos emeralds but I didn't care enough to do so.
It's not as good as Mario's best. There are plenty of great ideas and great style and the game is very good, but it's not as well designed as most Mario platformers. And the end is a bit anti-climactic after all the crap I had to go through to get there. But for the most part it still holds up as a great classic.

I actually managed to stumble upon a hidden 1-up in a secret area I never knew about before -- this sort of thing always blows my mind, since I've played the classic Sonics so many times. Some levels I enjoy more than others, but for playing the game all together I'm finding I appreciate the variety a bit more than in past playthroughs. Not every stage needs to be full of loop-da-loops, steep hills, and winding tunnels. Trap-filled platforming stages and water-filled stages have their place too.
I made sure to collect all the Chaos Emeralds as I went along. (It wasn't as hard as I was expecting...) I have a soft spot for the Sonic 1 special stage. The song for it is strangely soothing.

Beat it.
It's a pretty solid game. Decently challenging, not hold-right to win like newer Sonics. It's about at the level where an inexperienced kid could clear it if they worked at it. There's only a handful of moments where the game just expects you to go brain-dead while watching loop-da-loops.

I wish there were fewer slow platforming sections and more of the obstacle course speed challenges like in Scrap Brain Zone or Star Light Zone. Those two and Green Hill were my favorites.

The speed control in this is really interesting. The game's essentially about controlling inertia. Sometimes it's safer to limit speed by tapping the move keys rather than holding down right. No spin-dash, need to build speed in advance and be aware of how long it takes to accelerate. It makes otherwise simple jumps much trickier. The game is also pretty free of gimmicks compared to later Sonics, which is a definite plus.
I hate how the bonus rounds: they're very important since you can get a whole continue from them, ontop of being able to earn 1ups, but they're annoying and last way too long so unless I'm planning to win with only the 3 starting lives I'm kind of forced to play shitty mini-games.

I can't believe it's been 26 years since this game was released! I never owned any Sega console but I remember playing it at a friend's place one afternoon, and that was it until I played Sonic Advance in the GBA and now this, the very first one, in the 3DS. Thinking back, I find it quite ironic that I have ended up playing all these Sonic games on a Nintendo console...
The 3DS version is pretty much a direct port of the original game, with the addition of 3D capability, the spin dash and save states (ugh!). I would've preferred something like in Sonic Advance where (if I remember correctly...) one has 3 lives for each world and infinite retries that send you back at the beginning of each world. With save states, it takes discipline to not save anywhere anytime, which kills the challenge.
However, I agree with the comments of some of you that Sonic's challenge often comes from "cheap tricks", like a downhill slope asking for a full speed dash only to come across a trap that pops out of nowhere. The designers clearly wanted to highlight the speed of the game in contrast with its main competitor at the time, Mario, but it is weird that sometimes they punish the speed in such an unfair way. I personally prefer Mario's level design in general but Sonic is still a lot of fun and worth of your time.
The game is still enjoyable to play nowadays and can be beaten in an afternoon, but with saves states it's perfect for pick up and play. It plays, sounds and looks very nice after 26 years. I'm a firm believer that pixel graphics never go out of fashion.
If you haven't yet, give it a go, but avoid the GBA port. I haven't tried it myself but apparently the game is laggy/buggy with lots of framerate drops. The 3DS version, although only available digitally, played flawlessly.

“If pain must come, may it come quickly. Because I have a life to live, and I need to live it in the best way possible.” -Paulo Coelho, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept
It’s not every day that one gets to experience for the first time a long-standing part of pop culture as an adult, having gone through an entire childhood of ignorance. This is the equivalent of a 30-year-old watching the Star Wars films for the first time or finding out after all your years of self-absorption and 1st-world-medicated narcissism that the world doesn’t really revolve around you at all. Granted, some adults don’t find this out until much later in life. Anyways, I had an experience such as this recently when I had the chance to play and complete a Sonic the Hedgehog game from start to finish for the first time ever. As I explained in my review of the (spoilers) excellent Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, I hardly touched Sega’s consoles as a kid.
After having gone my entire life up to this point with this huge region of popular culture beyond my grasp, it turns out I didn’t really enjoy Sonic. I will certainly get as deep into that statement as possible but what an anti-climax. Someone asked on Twitter recently what my most disappointing retrogaming experience was and I showed no hesitation. Yes, I played Sonic the Hedgehog and I did not like it. Now I know Sega’s biggest (and only) major IP is a famed character, or at least he was. He has quite a secret cabal large and respectable following of decent and fair-minded citizens but if I stopped here at the end of the first game in his franchise, I wouldn’t understand why the character and his series became beloved at all.
I don’t think it’s enough to dismiss my adverse reaction on the basis of this being Sonic’s first adventure. Some Sonic apologist out there may decry, “But this is only Sonic 1! You can’t throw an idiom-baby out with idiom-bathwater! Of course it was the least refined in the series, it was the first! [Inarticulate fanbase growling noises!]”
And do you know what? They’re right. Indeed a lot of first games in some franchises are rather poor in comparison to the heights they later achieved. But then again, that defense is flawed since there are a great many franchises that did begin with their best foots forward, as it were. Super Mario Bros., Pokémon Red/Blue, The Legend of Zelda, Tetris, Kingdom Hearts, Super Smash Bros., Marvel vs. Capcom, Arkham Asylum, and so on… they may not be the best games in their respective series but they were phenomenal opening acts to truly legendary adventures.
All these words being said, I fully expect the Sonic games to get better in my estimation and you can be sure I’m playing them in order by release. It’s my duty. I’ve already dabbled in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and it’s proving to be a much more enjoyable game that’s pure to its concept, curing most of what irked me about its predecessor in just its introductory stages. But that still leaves us with Sonic 1 to account for.
Let’s talk what this game is and then we’ll discuss how it came to be. It’s my opinion that the ugliness of that latter issue is at the root of what made Sonic so pointed, specific, limited, out-of-focus and over-the-top.
