The upgraded hardware of the Sega Y Board allows individual sprites and the background to be rotated–even while being scaled–making the visuals more dynamic. Designed and directed by Yu Suzuki, the game was a critical and commercial success upon release in arcades. It was subsequently ported to various home computers in Europe by Activision in 1989, followed by a PC Engine port published in Japan by Asmik Ace in 1990. It was not released on Sega consoles until the Sega Ages release for the Sega Saturn in 1998. Read less

My thoughts:

When people think of Kart racers, they'd probably think of Mario Kart first. It's really neat to see how this lesser-known title is one of the "grandfathers" of kart racers with how it presents full looping circuits with rollercoaster elevation changes in sprite-based pseudo-3D (Similar to OutRun / Hang On). For a game released in 1988 before the SNES was released, this is mind-blowing! Not to mention considering this is classic SEGA we're talking about, the game has an INCREDIBLE jammin' soundtrack with resemblance to Turbo OutRun's soundtrack.

That being said, I find this game really hard to approach for me. The camera is really close to the kart's bumper, making it hard to see sharp curves ahead unless you have the track memorized. Also, the camera angle tilts heavily on turns, which I find disorienting. Not to mention, I find the game's steering to be rather twitchy.

Still, I appreciate the game for what it did, and I'll definitely continue to listen to the soundtrack including the amazing arrangements on the music album release (link).
