Control a clown to pull in and throw back balloons hurled from the top of the screen. If you line up three or more balloons of the same color in a vertical row, they will burst. Control a clown to pull in and throw back balloons hurled from the top of the screen. If you line up three or more balloons of the same color in a vertical row, they will burst. If you're not quick enough, the balloons will squash the clown and the game is over. Once you've got the hang of bursting balloons, you'll need to master combos and chains. The third Magical Drop game, first released in 1997, was also developed for the Neo Geo. This games adds representatives for the remaining Tarot Major Arcana, as well as introducing a "daughter" Strength character that more closely resembles the traditional depiction of Strength. The game adds a third button, which allows players to add rows to their field at any time. Additionally, attacks now sends lines to the opponent in non-even rows that vary by character. Hirameki mode is replaced by Adventure Mode, which is a board game that challenges players to reach Empress before CPU-controlled rivals. The English versions of Magical Drop III remove the hardest difficulty setting in Vs. CPU Mode and rival opponents in Adventure Mode. Read less

Bretty fun. I was able to beat the vs cpu mode but the adventure mode and the puzzle mode are kicking my ass. need to try again when I've had more sleep. Doing combos in this is too big brain for my sleep deprived ass.

Magical Drop is a nice classic little puzzle game -- or rather, tile-matching "falling blocks" sort of game. It's very simple, which works great for an arcade game to play against whichever friends happen to be with you, regardless of how much video game experience they have. You shoot orbs and match the colors to make groups of them disappear -- keep at it until one of you gets a game over upon orbs reaching the bottom of the screen.

There isn't much wrong with this game -- the main issue I suppose is just that there's a variation of this formula that I think is a lot better: Money Puzzle Exchanger. The overlap between that and Magical Drop is immense, but MPE just nails the level of depth I'm looking for in this genre (and feels a bit more unique, and thus more engaging). Still though, Magical Drop is a nice game to have, and from what I've generally heard this third entry is the best in terms of content. The Japanese version at least (selectable at the start in the ACA NeoGeo modern re-release) has a solid little "board game" setup you can play that is worth checking out.
