Each character has his or her own unique strength and weaknesses. For example, the Warrior is strongest in hand-to-hand combat, the Wizard has the most powerful magic, the Valkyrie has the best armour and the Elf is the fastest in movement. Upon selecting a playable character, the gameplay is set within a series of top-down, third-person perspective mazes where the object is to find and touch the designated exit in every level. An assortment of special items can be located in each level that increase player's character's health, unlock doors, gain more points and magical potions that can destroy all of the enemies on screen. The enemies are an assortment of fantasy-based monsters, including ghosts, grunts, demons, lobbers, sorcerers and thieves. Each enters the level through specific generators, which can be destroyed. While there are no bosses in the game, the most dangerous enemy is "Death", who can not only drain a character's health, but is difficult to destroy. As the game progresses, higher levels of skill are needed to reach the exit, with success often depending on the willingness of the players to cooperate by sharing food and luring monsters into places where they can be engaged and slaughtered more conveniently. While contact with enemies reduces the player's health, it also slowly drains on its own, thus creating a time limit. When a character's health reaches zero, that character dies. The character can be revived in place with full health by spending a game credit (i.e. inserting a coin) within a certain short time window after it died. This allows even the least proficient players to keep playing indefinitely, if they are willing to keep inserting coins. Less

GigaDeathNullGolem's review of Gauntlet

enter image description here Finally finished this (well i got to floor 98 anyway, got sent back to floor 32 and had a ragequit and finished watching a lets play of the final level) enter image description here An Ok port. The arcade is certainly more memorable than the NES version. there are some voice samples which are nice. Seeing so many monsters on the screen without lag at times (if they are different kinds of enemies it seems worse) is unusual for a NES game. but other than that, this is basically just a mix of Dungeon Crawl with Action-Role Playing games at the time. It feels more tedious than what I remember it being like. The different classes is interesting and makes for some replayability and challenge. I really dislike the elf and the warrrior though, and the wiard feels weaker than the valkyrie with less benefits.

The forbearer of Diablo and World of Warcraft
This review is for the Arcade version

Before Diablo and before World of Warcraft, you had Gauntlet. This colorful arcade game, with it's great sound effects and high levels of challenge (it's a quarter sucking behemoth), was the first time players got the template of a dungeon crawling labyrinth full of monsters, mazes and other challenges. The multi player element, each with different skill sets, was also quite unique. It, along with Paperboy and Marble Madness, was one of the three games in Atari's arcade comeback, which happened after the company split into two. Unfortunately, these games tend to be left off Atari compilations due to rights issues (Warner Bros owns the rights to Atari Games titles), which is too bad, as they would make excellent additions to the 50th anniversary compilation coming out soon.

Run the Gauntlet
This review is for the Nintendo Entertainment System version

gauntlet

Fairly unique and forgotten action adventure game converted from the arcades to the NES by Tengen. There's 100 floors of fierce armies of enemies and treasure and keys to find. It's a lot of trial and error as you learn a few floors, die, and have to start again, to eventually - run the Gauntlet.

It's impressive how many enemies can spawn on screen at the same time actually, and the level design is smart and varied enough to keep you entertained. The music is great and stucks with you for a while, and other sounds are also pleasant and produced nicely. Gauntlet is difficult but rewarding and deserves a second look if you want to clear some dungeons!

How can a game be too difficult to complete with a max power password, walkthrough, save states and slow motion? I made it to stage 82 as the valkyrie before running out of hp. My password brought me all the way back to stage 63. Apparently those treasure rooms in the water world with the stupid random teleporters and fake exits did not update my password as I was never able to find the exit in time, despite repeated attempts save state scumming. No way am I replaying stages so I looked up a password to use and skipped the last few combination rooms. I did make it to the hydra boss and killed it but lacked enough hp to get past the rest. I only had about 200p hp and 2 potions when I reached the boss, despite playing as optimally as I could and save state scumming to erase unnecessary damage. I certainly could have optimized it better and won but the game was lucky I continued with that looked up password.

I vaguely recall playing either this or Gauntlet 2 back in the day. It was probably the genesis version, probably 2 player with my cousin. I …

I vaguely recall playing either this or Gauntlet 2 back in the day. It was probably the genesis version, probably 2 player with my cousin. I liked the concept of this game but there were so many annoying aspects that ruined my enjoyment. The 1 projectile on screen limit sucked hard and I hated when I missed a shot down a long corridor and had to wait precious seconds before I could shoot again, often taking damage too. Missed opportunity to differentiate the classes by having number of allowed projectiles and projectile speed be stats. 1 slow moving projectile makes sense for the warrior while the wizard should be pew pewing near light speed bolts all over the place. Valkyrie and elf somewhere in the middle of course. Or at least allow multiple projectiles after a power potion or score level, or make melee combat far less suicidal. Other things I did not like: having to acquire the combination to the final stage, random teleporters, invisible walls, fake exits, and time limits including the passive hp loss. There should have been more permanent upgrades to find (like changing the hp loss over time into regeneration), or even temporary weapons and armor. Still the amount of content for a NES game was fairly impressive. Oh and it took me an absurd amount of time to get to the password input screen, including having to look up how to do it. Even then it was way harder than necessary when it should have been the 3rd option after 2 players. Way harder than necessary sums up this game well.

6.5/10

wow how is the elf the best character in this? (According to the main gamefaq it is) The elf is really hard to control and takes a beating, i can make it with the others to at least level 10 but not this guy, all it takes is one freeze trap at the wrong time with that fleet footing and it's curtains long-ear!

Omg I love the UI in this so much! So well-built for a group of kids to eat away at their coins at the arcade ha. And the narrator is great (the Sound and Look are the best parts indeed).

As I play it though it clearly was about collecting money... (which after all, was the point of an arcade was it not). Can revive with coins, can get health with coins and so on. I really don't like that Health depletes with time, but I suppose I could see that as a sort of timer mechanic. There is no set ending

I kept thinking this reminds me of something, especially with Level 2 with that utter onslaught of Ghosts with their simple pathfinding waiting behind the door. I knew what to do. But how? Then I remembered! Dandy! You can very clearly see that this game was built off Dandy (quite literally). And just like with Dandy, I don't love the lure-the-enemy-then-spam-attack gameplay. That time gameplay, to me, doesn't feel so much hard as it does tedious. And so I stopped after clearing Level 2, despite having plenty of health and 2 Potions accumulated. I'm sure the gameplay …

I'm sure the gameplay gets more complex later, but it's clear it'll be based around that tedious mechanic. (btw the piles of bones things are spawners for the enemies so kill those ASAP)

Tbh Dandy deserves more credit than it gets for spawning this franchise... I'm excited for the later iterations of Gauntlet though!
