Asteroids is an arcade space shooter released in November 1979. The player controls a spaceship in an asteroid field which is periodically traversed by flying saucers. The objective of the game is to destroy both, asteroids and saucers. The triangular ship can rotate left and right, fire shots straight forward, and thrust forward. Once the ship begins moving in a direction, it will continue in that direction for a time without player intervention unless the player applies thrust in a different direction. The ship eventually comes to a stop when not thrusting. The player can also send the ship into hyperspace, causing it to disappear and reappear in a random location on the screen, at the risk of self-destructing or appearing on top of an asteroid. Early Arcade Games Are More Fun Than I Gave Them Credit For!

Look: 7/10 Fine enough. Simple, functional, not too cluttered except when to add excitement to the game.

Sound: 7/10 Good enough, not annoying and the speeding-up music definitely helps with the gameplay. But I wont include it in the rating, since I'm starting to get to that 80s era that I try to avoid doing so (but then again, I …

Look: 7/10 Fine enough. Simple, functional, not too cluttered except when to add excitement to the game.

Sound: 7/10 Good enough, not annoying and the speeding-up music definitely helps with the gameplay. But I wont include it in the rating, since I'm starting to get to that 80s era that I try to avoid doing so (but then again, I may need to reevaluate that... if I can enjoy Atari 8-bit music and early arcade music, why shouldn't I rate games based on it? Let alone games that came later?... I set the precedent when I first went "backwards" in time for games, er, to NES and MSX ha, but now that I've played a lot of 70s games, I may need to change that perspective.... I struggle with not having a show or movie or music on while gaming, so I typically haven't associated sound with my games except for certain special games like KH and FFX... it seems I'm starting to enjoy having sound on more... hmmm. something to think about)

Play: 8/10 I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The aiming gets a bit frustrating and goofy at times but for the most part, the mechanics are impressive for its time! Very seamless and fast-paced. I played for like 15 mins before realizing you can thrust forward and even hyperspace, not that there was much use for hyperspace except during emergencies. I had gotten so used to staying stationary in the center and shooting from there, so I mostly stuck to that ha.

Feel: 7/10 Despite having fun with it, and really seeing myself more and more as okay with arcade-style games, I can't deny it just isn't my thing to go for highest points. I like when there's a set adventurous goal. But I dunno... when I'm done with the chronology project, and have less pressure to move forward, and replay these old games, maybe I'll finally accept it's okay just to have some fun in a game for a while and consider that a "Great game" instead of expecting some 200+ hour commitment a la FFX. I'm starting to get nervous, what if I don't even enjoy replaying FFIX or even the earlier FFs I've always loved, but now might feel too long. Ironically, maybe then I will be missing these shorter, simpler arcade-style games, and gone through a flip-flop... we shall see..

Attachment: 8/10 When/if I return to early arcade games, this and Space Invaders definitely make the cut!

I remember hating this game a lot, but having played it once again, I had a blast dodging and blasting asteroids and taking out enemy saucers as well. After playing Space Invaders, it's nice to have a ship that can move in all the cardinal directions!

1001 Games - #8

Pros: addictive gameplay, screen-wrapping effect adds depth, classic vector graphics

Cons: may seem shallow by today's standards

Cons: may seem shallow by today's standards

Recommendation: despite the fact that the simplicity of Asteroids may turn some off (I personally know people who refuse to play classic arcade games), I feel that it is one of the few early arcade titles that still stands up just as well today. It's challenging but never frustrating, and the controls are extremely intuitive. A great game.
