The Japanese Action Role-Playing game inspired by Western Isometric RPGs?

I went into Light Crusader blind feeling up for an adventure I might complete in a day. I didn't want anything too hard that would drag on and figured this would be worth a try seeing it tends to run about 9 hours on HLTB so I thought i would risk it. Overall it's a rather nice looking (and sounding, it's got a nice and unique rendered soundtrack for sure) title for the genesis. It is fairly easy to play as well for a game from this era, it just requires patience to get through certain spots in it.

Like most RPGS it's a good idea to talk to everyone in town. Cats are people too!

The game play itself is a kind of action adventure in the same vein as virtually any Japanese Action-Roleplaying game from that era (I'm not saying Zelda!) there are some light puzzles thrown in here and there that consist of the room you are in, and then the puzzles tend to get a bit trickier as you get towards the end of the game. There are three puzzles in the game at the end that are really pretty hard the rest aren't anything to gripe about.

Odds are stray beams will escape during gameplay due to your Megadrive being unable to handle the blast processing of Light Crusader

The game consists of you wandering through a multi-leveled dungeon of about 6 or so floors room to room and on occasion you go back to town to do stuff (a mechanic that functions quite a bit like the first Diablo even though this game predates it considerably.) some rooms have enemies, some have items, some have puzzles and some have well, nothing. you collect upgraded armor, weapons and gauntlets to take less damage and deal more. there are also items that heal you for HP and stuff like that, but it's all very basic and for the most part, gold isn't very relevant and XP doesn't even exist. You have magic spells that you can channel elements into to have different effects (ranges attacks) but i found myself rarely really using it beyond that of a simple heal spell, There is a nice automapper function that looks pretty clean.

You often take on three goblinoids at once, just as depicted on the cover!

It's an okay game its not very substantial in terms of gameplay and the story is banal as well but it's a nice enough looking game that even has action sequences based on the cover art. It's overall a well designed and conceived game with a lot of details in certain places that are either thematically on point or just look and feel right. You might enjoy this if you like Western Role Playing games and enjoy such titles such as The Immortal or Mystic Towers as it looks and feels a bit like those. I think the best part is the music though, it's a nice one and i'd recommend it.<>
