Just finished and I'm in absolutely awe.
This game is so stupid and ridiculous that is absolutely great. I still can't believe the boss fight after the factory level. This game goes absolutely bananas. It's fucking crazy.

SPOILERS!!!!! Just finished Lady Dimitrescu boss fight. Was super good and have really enjoyed game so far. It's not horror where it paralyzes you into not being able to do anything, but instead is so fun that you want to keep playing. I'm really enjoying this one and I'm super scared for House Beneviento.

I'm coming up on what appears to be one of the final areas of the game, having completed the game's 4 core objectives and having cleared out the village of just about everything. I think they've done well to recognize that the series can be good at several types of gameplay experiences, and to channel that into a game with a lot of variance. Using the village as a hub with progressively more things to unlock really furthers this goal well, and I'm finding the whole experience to be really enjoyable. I never know exactly what I'm going to get each time I sit down to play.

This is the House of Beneviento.
If I don't sleep tonight (or ever again), you can blame this house.
Its clear to me that someone on the Resident Evil team REALLY liked P.T.

As I said when I played Monster Hunter Rise on Switch, the RE Engine is black magic. I cannot believe how extremely good RE Village looks and feels on a base PS4

This game is so much fun. I played about 3 hours after work, up through the game’s first major boss fight which was really awesome, surprisingly large scale for so early in the game. No notable complaints. The pace feels perfect, the kind of game I can just play for hours.

The first two major areas are a strong opener. One is outdoors with this big tense survival encounter, some interesting story beats, and a fun extended chase sequence after setting up a few of the main villains. Then you’re set loose indoors in your usual type of first big RE level like the RCPD or main Baker House. Lots of fun nods to RE4 in here. Can’t wait to play more tomorrow.

I'm not really sure where people are getting the idea that this game has a strong start that mellows out because so far the beginning has been outright awful. At about one hour and thirty minutes in, it's been nothing but set piece after set piece. The only time I've fired my gun is on the very first enemy that you have to kill. I thought after getting into the castle I'd finally be able to, you know, play the game, but instead how about another set piece? The most annoying part is that this lacks any sort of atmosphere that RE7 had at the beginning and also lacks the comical ridiculous campy horror previous games had and it all falls flat. (Though honestly, Ethan's dialogue IS pretty funny and sometimes ridiculous and not to mention his INSANE durability.). I hear the game isn't very long either so I wonder why they made the intro so long. I think I finally get to play the game though so I hope this strong start I heard about actually... you know... starts.

Played the first few hours last night. Very spooky and unnerving opening sequence. It's also absolutely gorgeous on PS5. But HOLY SHIT is that first major combat encounter no joke on Hardcore. The enemies are a lot more aggressive and agile than they were in RE7, which makes landing shots considerably more difficult. I really appreciate the obvious reference to another iconic RE opening... It really does feel like they spliced RE7 and RE4 into one game. Loving it so far.

From Kotaku's review of Resident Evil Village:
Resident Evil Village still falls prey to the series’ most pernicious problems, notably the inevitable swerve from horror to action

This was my biggest problem with Resident Evil VII, and it's probably what will keep me from bothering with Village, unless I score a free copy. I think one of the biggest mistakes of most horror games is leaning into action-combat. As soon as you have an arsenal of weapons to thwart the threat of a game the horror of the game loses its teeth.

We all know about cyberpunk and steampunk, but have you heard about biopunk?
I wrote about this sci-fi subgenre, explaining what it is and how the Resident Evil franchise become its poster child.
