Resident Evil Village is a first-person survival horror game and the sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. The game maintains elements from previous Resident Evil games, with players having to scavenge environments for items and manage their resources. However, it adds more action-oriented gameplay, with higher enemy counts and a greater emphasis on combat.

RE8 is probably not in my top 5, barely makes my top ten of the series… but after replaying it for my third time, it has kind of grown on me.

I really disliked how disjointed it felt on release. Each house was very different and almost felt like a cutting room floor compilation rather than a proper game with vision. That still holds true for me, and the difference in quality between Mistress Dimetrescu’s castle and … Moreau’s swamp… it’s night and day. That’s not to mention the Call of Duty ending.

But I guess I’ve just embraced the game’s absurdity. It has some highlights - I enjoy the village, the castle, and even the factory grew on me, but it’s still a bit scatterbrained and not anything close to my favorites of the series.

Still a fun ride if you can embrace its absurdity. Not really a fulfillment of the promise that 7 gave us, but not a total drop off in quality either. Oh also - I really enjoy the Rose DLC!

Here is looking forward to Requiem, hoping it nails the momentum that 7, 2 remake and 4 remake gave us.

Traiasca!

Much better than RE7, meaning it gave you some fucking time to be immersed, to enjoy things as scenery, slower paced gameplay.. you know, fucking immersion. Bought the hype but not my thing

I've never really been a fan of Resident Evil. I love all the culture and hype around it, hearing people gush about it, etc. But I've tried to play several of them and they've just never been for me. This one was no exception. I got maybe 5 hours in but it just didn't hook me.

Dude not my limbs again. I need nanobots

It starts with a kick in the groin, fingers lost, hand recovered with "laudanum". Wtf capcom?. For me, it's same formula different characters. Nice change of inventory, but i still prefer the old one, rather than having another one for ingredients. Ok, ok, not here to complain. I can't take this game too seriously, the story, don't even get me started. I don't care about the characters or the story, i just go through the cutscenes for fun, appreciate the level design, same formula of puzzles, it's starting to smell like the other reskinned games that this industry has to offer. Ok i lied i did complained a bit. Playing through the series, i realised i play only for crafting, level design, art, sound, some difficulty there doesn't hurt. I don't care about anything else. Just give us 4 remake and re 9. Thank you. P.S.: 7 kicked ass in my opinion. Oh, and pressing button to automatically use knife on crates, it's insulting.

Just finished and I'm in absolutely awe.

This game is so stupid and ridiculous that is absolutely great. I still can't believe the boss fight after the factory level. This game goes absolutely bananas. It's fucking crazy.

Great story but didn't like it as much as Resident Evil 7! Ethan was much tougher in 8 than on RE7 tho.

SPOILERS!!!!! Just finished Lady Dimitrescu boss fight. Was super good and have really enjoyed game so far. It's not horror where it paralyzes you into not being able to do anything, but instead is so fun that you want to keep playing. I'm really enjoying this one and I'm super scared for House Beneviento.

I'm coming up on what appears to be one of the final areas of the game, having completed the game's 4 core objectives and having cleared out the village of just about everything. Looking back at these 4 main areas, I am pretty struck by how different they were, and not just in their distinct visuals.

Minor spoilers - One is a classic RE area full of keys and puzzles. One is somewhat of a psychological horror where your weapons are completely taken away for a solid hour. One is a big setpiece with lots of running and quick thinking. And the final one is an RE4-esque action gauntlet of loads of tough enemies followed by a monster of a boss fight.

I think they've done well to recognize that the series can be good at several types of gameplay experiences, and to channel that into a game with a lot of variance. Using the village as a hub with progressively more things to unlock really furthers this goal well, and I'm finding the whole experience to be really enjoyable. I never know exactly what I'm going to get each time I sit down to play.

If I don't sleep tonight (or ever again), you can blame this house.

Its clear to me that someone on the Resident Evil team REALLY liked P.T.

As I said when I played Monster Hunter Rise on Switch, the RE Engine is black magic. I cannot believe how extremely good RE Village looks and feels on a base PS4

The first two major areas are a strong opener. One is outdoors with this big tense survival encounter, some interesting story beats, and a fun extended chase sequence after setting up a few of the main villains. Then you’re set loose indoors in your usual type of first big RE level like the RCPD or main Baker House. Lots of fun nods to RE4 in here. Can’t wait to play more tomorrow.

I'm not really sure where people are getting the idea that this game has a strong start that mellows out because so far the beginning has been outright awful. At about one hour and thirty minutes in, it's been nothing but set piece after set piece. The only time I've fired my gun is on the very first enemy that you have to kill. I thought after getting into the castle I'd finally be able to, you know, play the game, but instead how about another set piece? The most annoying part is that this lacks any sort of atmosphere that RE7 had at the beginning and also lacks the comical ridiculous campy horror previous games had and it all falls flat. (Though honestly, Ethan's dialogue IS pretty funny and sometimes ridiculous and not to mention his INSANE durability.). I hear the game isn't very long either so I wonder why they made the intro so long. I think I finally get to play the game though so I hope this strong start I heard about actually... you know... starts.

I really appreciate the obvious reference to another iconic RE opening... It really does feel like they spliced RE7 and RE4 into one game. Loving it so far.

This was my biggest problem with Resident Evil VII, and it's probably what will keep me from bothering with Village, unless I score a free copy. I think one of the biggest mistakes of most horror games is leaning into action-combat. As soon as you have an arsenal of weapons to thwart the threat of a game the horror of the game loses its teeth.
