A nostalgic pre-review score of 7.5/10 This is a pacier, more dynamic RE2. This snappier nature helps me overlook the back tracking and mediocre puzzling that was present in the 1998 original. The boss battles are still terrible due to the limited fov, lack of a real dodge and the tight/narrow environments, but the RE4 style combat and mobile camera are still a big improvement.
The REMAKE is more of an action game than a horror, despite some effective jump scares. The visuals are obviously a massive improvement and the darkly lit environments create some of the tension that is missing due to the removal of fixed camera angles. The flickering lights and damp, narrow, blood spattered corridors give the game a creepy enough atmosphere, at least initially.
The characters are still as bland as communion wafers and the dialogue is pretty terrible, especially with the often stilted delivery, e.g. "It's good to see your face" & "We can get a puppy!", "A puppy". Both campaigns are basically the same, with each story appearing to exist in its own universe. It would have been nice if they'd spent more time on making each character's campaign different, with more interactions between Claire and Leon.
The game does get survival right, as resources are limited but well placed. The harder to put down zombies and relentless Mr X, mean strategy is more important this time around, which adds variety to each playthrough.
It performs well on my potato too!

This game is really well done. The attention to detail is astonishing. It's like they borrowed the gameplay and mechanics from a classic PS1 game (y'know, back when games were actually fun and good) but then drizzled it with a nice lick of paint and a few modern conveniences. The design of the environments/characters, the sound in particular. For most of the game there's no HUD at all; it's intensely immersive and very reminiscent of Dead Space (and they clearly drew some inspiration from that game). RE7 was pretty cool, but this is something else entirely; the hype is quite justified.

Just finished my Leon playthrough, about to start Claire.

The pacing and sense of progression is near perfect here, always keeping you on your toes for some big spooky scare, but also beautifully holding your attention at all times with little side missions which often reaps rewards that give you an advantage in combat. Some of the scares, especially the first two Licker encounters, are so amazing in their execution that I can't believe they exist. Navigating the Raccoon Police Station, I never quite feel safe, but I also never feel defenceless since the game gives you just enough ammo to combat enemies, but not where you can spray and pray. Also, the Tyrant (or Mr X, as the internet seems to call him) is a genius method in completely changing the feel of exploration. This has been a lot of fun so far and I can't wait to finish it.

Playing my first ever horror game -- Resident Evil 2. I've always avoided horror games because I get scared easily, but I heard so many good things about this game that I just had to try it. I was doing OK up until I encountered the guy who stalks you. Screw this, I'm out.

Capcom on a roll! Between this game, Monster Hunter World and Mega Man 11 they are hitting it out of the park.
Glad one of my OG favorite dev is still doing great work. Looks sadly at Konami

Once I stopped conserving ammo and started running around like a mad woman guns-a-blazing I began to have so much fun. I still have more ammo and health than I can possibly use but quickly dodging around zombies and running from one end of the map to the other without bothering to save or restock has made it a lot more fun. Current verdict. This is an okay at best survival horror game but a really fun shooter. This might seem like a backhanded compliment but viewing it like this has genuinely increased my enjoyment of the game by an order of magnitude.
