The gluttonous King Dedede has stolen all of the food from the inhabitants of Dream Land for a midnight feast, so Kirby, a resident of Dream Land, goes to retrieve the food and stop Dedede. Kirby's Dream Land plays like other platformers of the 8-bit and 16-bit era of video games: Kirby must use various natural abilities and occasionally external abilities or items while heading toward the goal at the end of each level. Like many 1980s-era platformers, the player can accumulate points, with an extra life granted when the player has enough points. However, because Kirby lacks a save function, scores are not recorded. Also, there are no save files, so the player has to start over again when the Game Boy is turned off, if the player chooses to return to the title screen after a Game Over, or if the player resets the game. All levels are played on a two-dimensional plane, letting Kirby move only left, right, up, and down. Kirby can walk, jump, and fly. Kirby can also inhale objects and enemies, swallowing them or spitting them out as projectiles. Read less

Very fun to play! The controls are pretty elementary but it is an old game so I get it. This is classic kirby shenenigans, the world is bright and cute and the music is happy and catchy.

First time playing Kirby’s debut game. Surprised how short it is, it’s only 5 levels. The extra mode almost feels like it is a different game, it’s so much harder by a ridiculous degree. More enemies and more attacks that do more damage. It beat my booty, and I’m gonna walk away from it since it seems like just a harder version of the standard game anyway. The Extra mode really exacerbated how clunky the game kind of feels. There’s a lot of recovery frames after almost every action and it feels strange that the A button can’t be used to float, even though it’s used for jumping (Kirby’s Adventure also has this quirk iirc). It’s strange to play a Kirby game without copy abilities. In a way, this feels more like a concept than a full game just because of what comes after. Music is rad, but Kirby seems less expressive. I think overall it was interesting to see the origin of a recognizable character, but I don’t know if it’s worth checking out beyond satiating curiosity.

This is a great palette cleanser for a quick pick-up-and-play platformer. Kirby doesn't have his copy abilities yet, but don't let that deter you from playing this first entry.

I finally beat Kirby's Dream Land extra game mode. It feels good because I use to play this all the time as a kid and I don't recall beating it in the highest difficulty. Now, I know this is not extremely challenging, but it does require several tries.

Not a hard game to beat, but still fun and charming in its oldschool way. When you finish the game there is a hard mode after, which I did not finish, so sadly this game isn't in the 100% finished category. I think it would be an easy one to "100%".
