The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the fifth main installment of The Legend of Zelda series and the first to be released for the Nintendo 64. It was one of the most highly anticipated games of its age, and is listed among the greatest video games ever created by numerous websites and magazines. The gameplay of Ocarina of Time was revolutionary for its time, it has arguably made more of an impact on later games in the series than any of its predecessors even though they had the same cores of exploration, dungeons, puzzles and item usage. Among the gameplay mechanics, one of the most noteworthy is the time-traveling system. The game begins with the player controlling the child Link, but later on an adult Link becomes a playable character as well and each of them has certain unique abilities. Ocarina of Time also introduces the use of music to solve puzzles: as new songs are learned, they can be used to solve puzzles, gain access to new areas and warp to different locations. Dungeon exploration is somewhat more puzzle-oriented than in earlier games but they are not too complex. Read less

I just picked up my old 3DS again and it seems to work just fine. Is playing the game on the 3DS a good way to enjoy it? For some reason I never could get into that console, but I am now trying to rediscover it, as buying a steam deck isn't an option for me right now and I am jealous of the new wave of handheld devices.

My daughter only knows Sheik from Smash Bros. Today she asked me if Sheik is a boy or a girl. Should I tell her? It kinda feels like ruining Rosebud or Darth Vader.

Hit a bit of a wall right after the Forest Temple where I got totally confused as to what to do. Completely forgot you have to bomb the rolling Goron in Goron City.... Didn't expect the Zelda 1 "bomb random stuff" strategy would need to seep into the later games.

It's less a "port" and more a wrapper for a particular ROM file for the game (PAL debug build) that adds a suite of optional enhancements on top.

Nice visual improvements like customizable framerate and resolution, widescreen, improved draw distance, 3D models replacing item sprites. Some good quality-of-life improvements and bug fixes, customizable controls including free camera control and extra items on the d-pad, optional cheats and item randomizer mode, tons of stuff in there.

Took a little while to configure it how I wanted it, but they also have a few presets including one targeting new players that want an authentic but slightly improved experience. I can definitely recommend checking it out if you're willing to brave the slightly weird waters of finding the needed files and getting it set up.

This is the definition of a "stone-cold classic." Such a great game and love getting to play it again now on my Switch.

What did I learn?

I learned to remember not to listen to reports originating with YouTubers, a group that notoriously makes money off of hits generated by sensational news.

Or to put it in other words, the emulation of both games is perfectly fine. Input lag? Nope. Significant graphical bugs? Nope. Maybe I need to dig further into the games to see if there are things like water reflections or fog that are affected, but so far these seem more than adequate.

My earliest memories were watching my dad play the NES and I grew up with a SNES as my first console but somehow missed being exposed to any Zelda games. When the PS1 came out I switched over to that and never had another Nintendo console. I've missed playing so many noteworthy Nintendo games over the years, Ocarina of Time being the chief shame spot in my gaming life, and sometimes think I should add some of them to my backlog.

So when it was announced that Nintendo 64 games, OoT included, would be featured in the Expansion Pack for the Switch's online service, the itch to finally play it crawled back into my mind. I don't own a Switch but surely this would be the best way to play aside from hunting down old physical hardware, right? Well, seems that may not be the case. Given the steep pricing of the service, noticeable input lag (https://twitter.com/Toufool/status/1452816511102562305), framerate issues, water texture, and fog issues (https://twitter.com/stopskeletons/status/1452901471553351680) this looks to be an inferior version of the game.

I mostly play on PC nowadays so emulation wouldn't be an issue from a technical standpoint, but I've never done it before and still have moral quandaries with the concept. But this is a 23-year-old game and is regarded as one of the best of all time, it's made its money and earned its countless plaudits. I really should play it regardless of the circumstances, right? I appreciate any step taken towards game preservation, but when what is being preserved is a lesser version of the original, I can't help but eye the world of emulation and piracy, no matter how much I don't want to.

Hearing impressions of the Switch version released via NSO, and learned that it as well as the GameCube, Wii VC, and Wii U VC versions can have anywhere from 2-5 times the input lag as N64 (100ms of lag being built-in to allow time to draw the graphics), as well as changes in the joystick deadzone and precision that together …

Hearing impressions of the Switch version released via NSO, and learned that it as well as the GameCube, Wii VC, and Wii U VC versions can have anywhere from 2-5 times the input lag as N64 (100ms of lag being built-in to allow time to draw the graphics), as well as changes in the joystick deadzone and precision that together make the game’s controls feel notably clunkier than the original. The game looks sharp on Switch, and would certainly be playable despite the control issues and a few visual and audio quirks, but it’s funny how a lower-effort attempt at game preservation can actually slightly harm the perception of a game in this way for both new and returning players, and result in people thinking it’s aged a bit worse than it actually has. I recommend OoT 3D for a true first-timer these days (which REALLY should be released on Switch), but definitely don’t let this completely deter you from playing the Switch version if it’s the only one you can access.

So, this doesn’t relate to Ocarina of Time, but I’m going away for a while around the country! So, I’m not gonna be active for a while. While I’m doing that, I’m looking for indie titles. I’ve been ignoring them for a long time, a choice that I really regret. Recommendations?

I didn't grow up with this game; I played it on the Virtual Console in 2010. This one still deserves the hype, it's just an incredible experience.

100% completion! The only version that I own that I haven't played yet is the Gamecube one, so if I ever come back to this game it'll be on the Gamecube.

I have been cleaning out my childhood bedroom today. I found $30 in an old birthday card. I also found a novelisation of OoT I started writing as a kid. It has been a good day!

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time goes down in history as one of the most influential games ever created. The memorable characters, locations, interactions, mechanics and even quirks are still recognised and parodied 20 years past its initial release. A game that can be enjoyed by all, from casual to longstanding gamers, from the young to the elderly and everything in between, it is not only recommended to play this at least once in your life, you owe it to yourself to do so.

The following ratings are judged against the standards and games of its time, in this case, what was present in 1998. The four categories of the game (Story, Gameplay, Graphics and Audio/OST) are rated based on my own opinions, they are then used to calculate the average of the overall game. The final verdict is found by rounding up the average to the nearest quarter star step. E.G. 4.15* would become 4.25*, 3.6* would become 3.75* etc.

  • 4.25* Story
  • 5* Gameplay
  • 5* Graphics
  • 5* Audio/Soundtrack

4.8* Averaged Rating

5* Final Rating.
