My relationship with this game has been a bit complicated over past few years. I remember when I was younger loving the game. I never managed to beat the game, most likely because I was a stupid kid, but I remember spending countless hours just roaming the empty Hyrule Field and talking to people trying to make progress. I remember getting as far as The Well and giving up because I was scared by the enemies. Years later I replayed the game on 3DS. I loathe this version of the game. There is just something off about it. I expected more in places that lacked it. There are definite improvements over the original release, but there is just something that rubs me the wrong way in the 3DS version. I spent the longest time thinking I was just blinded by nostalgia. It was only until recently that I realized the errors of my ways. I played the original on a N64 emulator and was almost immediately hooked. I originally only planned on doing a quick playthrough of just the mandatory things, but I soon found myself collecting every heart piece, killing every Gold Skulltula, and doing all of the side quest. The story is almost an exact retelling of the one from ALTTP yet it was still engaging. Even by N64 standards the graphics aren't anything to write home about, but they have a lot of charm. The game runs at a constant 20 fps most of the time. I thought I would be bothered by this, but the game surprisingly still plays very smoothly. There were only a few instances where the game would dip in frame rate. The only time I felt that I was having to fight the controls was when the targeting system just didn't want to work for whatever reason. The pacing is almost perfect. There were never moments, with the exception of one moment, when I thought the game was going too slow or too fast. The music ranges from very atmospheric tracks to really up beat music. My personal favorite tracks from the game have to be Forest Temple, Lost Woods, and Gerudo Valley. The game would honestly be nearly perfect if it weren't for a few hiccups. Mainly the Water Temple. The Water Temple is not hard by any means, it's just confusing in it's layout and kind of tedious to get through as it requires you to switch around your items constantly and change your boots which takes a bit of time. The game also has a perfect length. It doesn't drag on too long and isn't too short. I 100% the game in about 30 hours. Overall the game has aged very well considering the hardware it's on and it's age. It would honestly be an almost perfect game if it weren't for the Water Temple and a few other hiccups along the way. It's definitely worth anyone's time to play if they're looking to play a very important part of gaming's history or just an amazing game in general.
