The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time, it utilizes the same engine and visual style as its predecessor. The game retains the traditional elements of Zelda games as well as those introduced in Ocarina of Time, such as active blocking with a shield, various throwing items, and the usage of melodies played on the ocarina to solve puzzles. Compared to the previous Zelda games, this installment is more oriented towards interaction with NPCs and has a larger variety of items, optional quests, and mini-games. It also includes a time system that spans three days, and this cycle must be reset periodically to progress through the game. Read less

A missed opportunity

The game on 3DS needs some fixes, thankfully I played with a mod that reverts back some changes like the original. The problem is that the quest system is bad, doesn't help at all and needs online guides to get to the dungeons. The problem is that the quest system is bad, doesn't help at all and needs online guides to get to the dungeons. They could have easly changed some dialogues to give better informations to the player or checkmarks on the map. Compared to Ocarina you can't play without guides and it's frustrating, that's why it's a worse game, still has its charming and I liked the atmosphere

Majora's Mask Review 8.2/10

This is the most original Zelda game you’ll ever play. The darker tone was a bold move on Nintendo’s part and they nailed it. Gameplay wise though, I hesitate to drown it in praise because it truly is an acquired taste. This is the most original Zelda game you’ll ever play. The darker tone was a bold move on Nintendo’s part and they nailed it. Gameplay wise though, I hesitate to drown it in praise because it truly is an acquired taste. The time loop mechanic will undoubtedly turn some players off and knowing where to go next can be obscure. A good portion of the side quests will leave you clueless and grumbling your way to a walkthrough. Not to mention the notoriously badly designed Great Bay Temple. On purely aesthetic grounds though I’s say it’s worth revisiting.

Definitely my favourite Zelda game. Can't believe I never played this as a kid.

If you're new to the series, play Ocarina first. Then play this one. Use the Song of Time religiously and get immersed. I beat the game sort of by chance, stumbling upon quests and temples at the right time, and I loved just being immersed in Termina. This game also gave birth to my favourite obscure character, Fierce Deity Link. …

A classic. Fixes most of the issues Ocarina of Time had though it did have a few problems of its own (namely the lack of dungeons, but sidequests fill that time well). I appreciated the overall darker tone which made the game stand out from the others I have played.

Nice Try

They worked hard on this game, but it's ultimately way too frustrating for Mr. Casual Gamer.

1001 Games - #455

Pros: tried-and-true OoT gameplay retained, side quests keep game from feeling too linear, unique and bizarre narrative

Cons: few dungeons compared to predecessor games, fixed save points, time limit may be off-putting

Recommendation: a worthy follow-up to OoT, Majora's Mask ranks near the top of a series that consists of some of the greatest adventure games. …
