The original arcade version of "Double Dragon II" is essentially an improved version of the first game. The biggest change in the game's controls are in the replacement of the original's punch and kick buttons with two directional-based attack buttons (Left Attack and Right Attack) similar to Renegade. Pressing the attack button of the player's current direction will do a standard series of punches, while pressing the opposite attack button will perform a back kick. A few new moves are added as well, including a Hurricane Kick. Like in the original game, the arcade version of Double Dragon II is divided into four missions: a heliport, a lumber storehouse, a wheat field, and the new hideout of the boss. Each stage has its own boss character with his own theme. After defeating Willy (the final boss from the original game) in the fourth stage, the player will confront a double of their own character for the game's final battle. If two players reach the end together, then both will each to have to face their own clone for the final battle. Read less

These games were revolutionary for their time but unfortunately they're frustrating to play today. It's never easy to be the first at something I suppose

Beat on Normal then Hard. The first half of the game on Normal was just right; fun and satisfying beating enemies up. I mostly did punch combos with the occasional jump kick. It was somewhat engaging choosing the correct button based on the direction of the enemy but the reverse kick did not seem useful. At no point was it useful to kick a behind enemy when surrounded as whichever enemy was not attacked would easily smack me to disrupt any combo. Jump kick was the best way out. The game got steadily worse as the levels went on due to more and more platforming. From occasional drops that enemies could knock me into, to a series of logs across a river, to the annoying vehicle boss, to the god awful Castlevania wannabe level with vanishing platforms, to the fucking conveyor belt room at the beginning of level 7 that took dozens of attempts. I eventually figured out the trick was to walk against the 2nd conveyor to get enough distance to not overshoot the last platform. Some of the worst platforming I have ever seen, in a game with no dedicated jump button no less! And with stiff controls that lacked any kind of mid air course correction. It ruined the game. I can't even imagine playing this without save states.

If all that platforming was not bad enough I had to do it all again on Hard to fight the final boss. Unlike on Normal, I put on 30 frames per second mode. The first half of the game was still pretty good. The enemies were a bit tougher and more likely to push through my attacks to hit me. It was not enough to only do simple punch combos, especially against the big guys. I did learn the moves from a guide. I learned the 3 punch grapple combo and how to convert that into max damage or a throw, but it seemed like the enemies that needed that much punishment could not be grappled. I could not reliably pull off cyclone kick but did get decent at hyper uppercut. I experimented with the reverse kick against the big guys thinking it might out range them but it did not help. Instead I killed them with a perfect ranged jump kick that was a feint to make them duck so I could hyper uppercut them to the face. I did hyper knee a few times, including knocking the 2nd disappearing boss into spikes. The ninjas were the worst enemies, constantly jumping around, throwing, and pincer attacking. It was save scum trial and error to see what I could actually land. On both difficulties I made use of the invincibility from losing a life to pummel that last ninja group. The final 2 bosses were much harder on Hard but not too bad. I got them with a mix of hyper uppercuts, jump kicks, reverse kicks and regular punches.

This game was worse than the original because of the extremely difficult platforming. At least in the first game the platforming was easy. Whoever thought it was a good idea to put this much obnoxious platforming in a beat em up with such terrible jump mechanics and controls needs a solid fist to the face. This game missed the point of a beat em up; the power fantasy of kicking the shit out of people and inserting fist and weapons into faces. Unfortunately the weapons on this game were also done wrong because they disappeared way too quickly, barely giving any time to have fun with them. The first half of the game was 7 or 8 while the platforming was 3 to 4. I'll average that out to

6.0/10

Well I completed this game and I was expecting to be overly impossible and difficult. But the only difficult parts were the insanely terrible platforming areas. But it was a great game though ☺️

History:
I actually don't have a lot of history with Double Dragon as a kid per se, but I was always keenly aware of their existence. I read about the games in various strategy guides, saw them in Nintendo Power and saw that really terrible movie... twice. Recently I've been spending more time with the Lee brothers, having thrown this cartridge in a few times prior to starting this project. I think I made it to Stage 3 or so...

Expectations:
Just a couple hours of some awesome Shadow Clan (Right?) ass kickin'! I'm hoping between Super C and Ninja Turtles I'll have the skills necessary to take this one down.

Night 1:

Yep, this game is as hard as I remember! I made it to the helicopter in the few minutes I played tonight, and remember making it further. Should be an interesting ride.

Night 2:

Angle of the picture as a result of me slipping off the ottoman mid shot...

So I'm not really diggin' this beat 'em up so much. As a whole it's not really my genre to begin with. It has it's moments, but I think my biggest complaint with this game is its difficulty. I don't have a problem with games that are difficult and demand skill and focus (Super C) but in this case I feel like I'm fighting against the game itself more than the enemies in it.

The timing of the special attacks, which almost feel mandatory for progression, is nearly impossible to get down. You characters are slow and clunky while the enemies will stand over your body and cheese you all day long. Never mind if you should get knocked down with an enemy on either side of you! After a while it just starts to feel cheap, and not very fun.

I've played through the game four times tonight and so far Stage 5 seems to be my stopping point. I'll give it another night and if I'm still not making progress I think it's time to move on.

Night 3:

I don't know what it is about that screenshot but the unbridled broness of it all makes me laugh every time.

Anyway, yeah, gave it another few goes and every time I landed at the same spot. I'm done playing this one.

Liked:
For an '89 game the graphics actually looked pretty great, and I loved just how '80s the whole atmosphere was. I want to go play FarCry Blood Dragon again! The game tried to give you a lot of variety in attacks which, for an old beat 'em up, was pretty cool. Co-op was fun.

Disliked:
While the game tried to give you a lot of options I found myself just trying to hammer the controller prying for a knee, uppercut or spinkick. Trying to actually get the timings down was just not happening. Situations I should have been able to handle reasonably just turned into exercises in frustration. The game just generally controller poorly, at least to me. Your characters moved slowly, and the enemies felt cheap. I would have also liked a couple continues rather than being sent back to the title screen after three deaths.
