One Of The Best Early Platformers--Addictive, Fun, Well-Done
This review is for the Arcade version

Look: 8/10 Great title screen, I love how there was static in the letter font, plus that absolutely frenetic "demo[nstration]" of the game, and the oft-mentioned absurd sound. enter image description here

Sound: 8/10 Definitely absurd. From the spaceship-sounding startup in the title screen, to the shoot em up sound gameplay sound effects, a wild ride for sure. (and then a very calm, blues-y interlude jingle at times ha). Rare that I don't wind up muting an arcade game sound, even as absurd and a bit too loud/nonstop for my usual taste. This would be a 9 or 10 if it had a truly striking track, though that blues-y interlude jingle might earn its way up there on future replays heh.

Play: 9/10 What a fast-paced and wild game ha, especially with that array of sound effects. The jump mechanic is quite goofy, and I wasn't a huge fan of how navigation changes, but overall very playable and fun. The jump mechanic in the "bonus level" type screens a la Donkey Kong etc. seemed smoother than the main gameplay's jump mechanic! Heh. These screens were so absurd yet well-done, I had to use a savestate just to try to capture the moment I wanted …

Feel: 9/10 One of those games, especially Round 4 and on, that makes you feel at "the edge of your seat" where I'd flinch/clench my body a bunch due to narrow jumps or seeing there's a wide gap I have to race to etc. Maybe I'm just really into the 80s games right now, I was originally crediting '84, but this is an earlier release I came upon thanks to kingbk83. Anyway, just another standout arcade game that I missed, really gotta re-explore early arcade platformers besides Donkey Kong--but.... probly after I finish up my current backlog before I add too many more heh. Holy crap, from Round 7 on, epilepsy warning! And it just gets so insanely fast-paced that I can't claim to truly have known everything I was doing, not to mention the collision masks got even sloppier then--but you know what? It was fun nonetheless. Just kneejerk reactions, jumping a lot, and thanking RNGesus for the swatter occasionally to beat the animals back into the inner core heh. My computer seriously was about to crash from the flashing lights and nonstop gameplay, even on the bonus levels at that point ha. But I was determined to keep playing till I ran out of lives again. My heart was legit racing by the time I finally successfully completed the bonus keeper segment . Not even sure what Round I was on but I think beyond Round 10 and for sure about 704k Score.

Attachment: 9/10 Unlike most arcade action games, rather than just try till I ran out of lives for the first time, like I did getting I dunno about 47k Score I believe, I immediately started over and played again--knowing the jump mechanic and gameplay better heh. Definitely a sign of a good game. And yep, even tho I almost tired of the insanely fast gameplay in the later rounds, and that I had already cycled through all "unique screens" (tho these are quite unique in that the platforms build and disappear, so they feel fresh even when re-cycled), I wound up playing till I lost every last life--even the bonus ones I got! Definitely sign of a great game, and I can't think of many other arcade games that got me to do that. enter image description here

I already replayed it and I know I will play it again. Plus, it will be a go-to pick-up-and-play game for get-togethers. Good stuff.

Edit: Very interesting, just read up that the princess/woman you save is named Zelda.... another standout feature heh

Completion: Score 738, 650 Playtime: ~1 hour

Strange Sounds From this Game
This review is for the Arcade version

If this game came out today, PETA likely would have a conniption, but as an early 80s gem, it's quite a unique game. Keep the animals contained while drinking beers. Every couple of levels, rescue your girlfriend in a blatant Donkey Kong rip off. And the sounds... I'm sure whoever was the sound person for this game was like a kid on Christmas, because it is the strangest collection of noises I've ever heard. I get it that it's suppose to be a bunch of animals, and the technology in the early 80s was pretty primitive, but wow, it is... something.

3.5, rounds up to a 4.
