Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation is the fourth game of the Tomb Raider games series, it plays very similar to the previous games in the series but some new things have been added to the game. The biggest addition is that now rather large parts of the game consist of several interconnected levels sometimes explored in any order, with puzzles in one level often requiring that some actions are done in other levels. The new additions to Lara's arsenal are a revolver and a bow with several sets of arrows including exploding and poisonous ones.

Krauzer's review of Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation

This title takes us back to the franchise's roots with a tighter, Egypt-focused story steeped in mythology, the game features improved graphics and more refined controls over its predecessors, though still feels clunky by modern standards. Puzzle-solving takes center stage here, with more complex and interconnected level design that rewards patience and exploration, however, the backtracking and sometimes obscure objectives can be frustrating.

The atmosphere is moody and immersive, thanks to strong visuals and sound design, sometimes it can even get you horror vibes, even straight out having some horror-themed levels. Overall, The Last Revelation is a solid, if slightly aged, entry in the series, best enjoyed by fans of the classic Tomb Raider formula who appreciate challenging puzzles and exploration, rather than some entries more focused on action.

One of the most notable aspects is how it commits to its Egyptian setting, giving the adventure a strong sense of cohesion. From vast desert tombs to intricate temple complexes and the bustling streets of Cairo, the environments feel interconnected and purposeful. The journey is driven by a more narrative-focused structure, with the accidental release of the god Set serving as a central thread that ties the locations together. This stronger …

From vast desert tombs to intricate temple complexes and the bustling streets of Cairo, the environments feel interconnected and purposeful. The journey is driven by a more narrative-focused structure, with the accidental release of the god Set serving as a central thread that ties the locations together. This stronger storytelling approach gives the game a sense of progression and urgency that elevates it above some of its more episodic styles of the previous entries.

As for its flaws, the level design, while impressive in scope and complexity, occasionally becomes overwhelming, with puzzles that require meticulous attention to environmental clues and item combinations. And this is highly dependent to what kind of player you are, if you enjoy this more obscure and slow puzzle and investigation gameplay, or not. Despite these rough edges, this title stands as one of the most content-rich and atmospheric entries of the classic era, representing both the peak and the growing pains of the original PlayStation formula established by this franchise.

*Warning: spoilers* Absolute best one in the Tomb Raider series, in my opinion
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

After the disaster that is, Tomb Raider III: Adventures of Lara Croft, I lost all hope. A good series, ruined. But then came Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation. The series redeemed itself instantly.

This installment is the best in the whole series in my opinion. It takes place in Egypt and its whole level design, the different puzzles, obstacles and challenges to overcome are just glorious.

In Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation, you start off in the past, in which you go on an adventure with your mentor, Werner von Croy. You are just a teenager at this point. You go to the temple complex Angkor Wat in Cambodia to search for an ancient artefact. When Werner does not respect the ancient ruins, it starts to collapse and you barely make it out, without von Croy or the artifact.

Years later, when exploring as the Lara we know and love today, you stumble across a crypt on your journeys and find a ancient amulet, belonging to the Egyptian God Seth. You accidentally remove it from his grave, which awakens him. Now he threatens to destroy the world and you must reverse your mistake and stop him. Meanwhile, your …

Meanwhile, your old mentor Werner von Croy is back and learns of the amulet. He sends his goons after you to steal it from your hands. You travel to Karnak, Luxor, Alexandria, Cairo and Gizeh, while being hindered and chased by von Croy and his buddies. In the many crypts and temples, you also need to overcome different challenges and unkillable beasts that chase you. It is all so epic.

This game is also, undoubtedly the largest and biggest one yet. As a kid, I spent hours and hours on this game and even today, as a grown ass man, it took me many days and hours to complete this gem from my childhood.

The graphics have been improved from the previous games and the animations are a lot smoother. The best thing of all, Lara’s rack is now round and polished. The new environments, fire, lighting and water looks also very nice and more polished than the first three games.

The sounds is also improved, with as biggest upgrade, the new sounds of the weapons and their fire. Pistols do not sound like pea shooters anymore, shotguns give a big roaring bang when fired and my personal favourite: The grenade launcher. It is still one of the better sounds designs that I experienced in a game.

When speaking of the controls, it is still just as clunky and stiff as the previous games. This is of course because of the Tank Controls this game uses. However, they feel a lot more responsive for some unexplainable reason. In this game, I also discovered some new tricks Lara can do, something I did not see or notice in the previous games, if they were even there. When holding a ledge, pressing shift and up lets Lara do an acrobatic leg swing onto the platform. So epic. When jumping and pressing crouch, Lara will back flip herself into attack position into the air. It looks really cool.

You also got some vehicle stages in this game in which you ride a motorcycle and a jeep. The controls for them are horrendous and these two stages I disliked somewhat.

I only had one complaint about this game. The Cairo levels. As a kid, and as a grown man, I struggled to find out where to go to next. I did not want to check for walkthroughs at first. But I got stuck on exactly the same point as when I was a kid. No matter how hard I tried, I could not figure it out. After a walkthrough, I was like: “Really..?”. Nevertheless, I completed the rest of the game without issues after this.

For me, Tomb Raider IV: The Last Revelation will always be my personal favorite in the series. This is mainly because it is the game that marked my youth, but also because of its excellent level design, it’s beautiful and different environments, puzzles and balance of platforming and action.

Definitely recommend this gem.

After removing it from the sarcophagus, he discovers that the amulet is the key to sealing the dark God Seth forever. Horus and his ally Samarkhet built the sarcophagus to hold Seth, and by removing the talisman, Seth was freed. It turns out that his guide works for Von Croy, who is determined to get the talisman for himself. Lara quickly flees after being chased by Von Croy's mercenaries. Lara visits an old friend, Jean-Yves, who reveals the full extent of his mistake. He also reveals that the only place he can find a way to reverse the damage is in the tomb of Samarkhet, hidden in the ruins of Karnak. Lara goes there and, after fighting Von Croy's mercenaries, finds the entrance and opens it with the amulet. Von Croy follows her, steals the talisman, and seals Lara inside. After walking through various traps and strange enemies inside the tomb, he finds the inscriptions that were placed there in case Seth was released. It tells about the armor of Horus, which was used by the God in his battle with Seth. When an ancient astrological conjunction occurs (the so-called thousand-year Constellation) and the armor, along with the amulet, is placed on the statue of Horus in his temple under the great Pyramid of Giza, the God can be summoned and once again imprison Seth. After escaping from a monster in the grave (which causes his guide to be killed) and jumping on a train, he goes to Alexandria, where he meets Jean-Yves once again. He tells her that Cleopatra's excavations around her palaces were interrupted by strange creatures that frightened the workers. Lara passes through the palaces and wins the armor. Upon returning to Jean-Yves, he discovers that he has been kidnapped by Von Croy and that the price for his release is armor. Lara goes on a date in Cairo to find the city in chaos and the sky darkened with strange clouds. After fighting in the streets, he finds a wounded Egyptian sergeant, who tells him about the strange and demonic creatures that guard and protect ancient sites around the city. After performing various tasks for the sergeant, he drives a truck filled with explosives into a large, dragon-like creature guarding the road to an ancient castle, giving his life so that Lara can move on. Lara finds Jean-Yves, who reveals that Von Croy has been possessed by Seth and that Seth is digging up the ancient Crusader vaults for the ceremonial tablet containing the binding spell. After passing the castle and avoiding the resurrected Crusader knights, Lara finds Von Croy/Seth in an ancient tomb opened with an amulet. Seth offers to "energize [him] as those around him fall". Lara refuses and escapes the tomb, pulling out the talisman, forcing Von Croy/Seth inside. Lara goes to Giza, where the forces of Seth have gathered to block the way to Horus, since the constellation of the thousand years is in place. After fighting these forces and climbing the great Pyramid, Lara finds her way to the temple of Horus and, attaching the armor and talisman to the statue, calls Horus. Horus partially completes his transfer, but Seth arrives and destroys the armor, but the amulet remains undamaged. Lara goes outside, avoiding Seth's attacks until the safe light of the constellation. She locks the doors to the temple with amulets, keeping Seth inside forever. On the way out, Lara sees Von Croy at the entrance. Unsure if she is free from Seth's influence, she does not want to hold his hand when the temple begins to collapse around her. Von Croy tries to save her as she dangles from a ledge, but is forced to hurry, leaving Lara to her presumed death. Von Croy takes off his hat and lowers his head into the collapsed entrance as the game ends. The gameplay is as follows.in this game, which consists of 7 chapters and 35 chapters, you are trying to complete the tasks. The music of the game is beautiful. The graphics of the game are not bad.My rating for the game: 10/10 (y) Good games to everyone 🙂

Playing this game after you played Tomb Raider III is like a revelation.

Joking aside almost every aspect of this game, that I played so far, is much more enjoyable than everything that I had seen in its predecessor.

I have high expectations on this one.
