You play a small green guy who needs to blow up eight towers, because their presence is somehow poisoning the water of planets which could potentially be ideal colonies. You need to jump over, kick, and run from various enemies in your journey to the top. Most vertical movement is achieved by jumping onto moving ledges at the right moment. The game was considered revolutionary in its time for its graphic technique. As the main character walked around the outside of the tower, the character was fixed in the middle of the screen while the tower itself rotated. This gave it a pseudo-3D effect. Towers are linked together via a voyage through the sea in your trusty MK.7 submarine. This plays out as a side-scrolling collect-'em-up in which bonus points can be obtained. Less

Pretty Cool but Flawed (and hard as nails)
This review is for the Atari 7800 version

Tower Toppler has oodles of ports on many systems. It came to my attention as a 'best of C-64' title. (However, I was curious to see what Atari Home Consoles might make of this game's animation) It's a very nicely bright and smoothly animated game. However, it's a bit hard to actually see the surface of the platforms compared to some of the other ports. I also just watched a quick play of the NES version (known as Castelian) and it features some of the same flaws in this game. The main one being the slow down that occurs when many sprites are on the screen and in the same manner. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't so jarring because this is a bit of a rhythm based game in the sense you have to quickly (100 seconds to be exact) clear a level and it's almost a muscle memory game where you have to remember every enemies route, location and the way to get to the next floor up.

The game is known for it's look and i gotta say it reminds me of FEZ. The simple rotation of the tower is nothing amazing but it's …

The game is known for it's look and i gotta say it reminds me of FEZ. The simple rotation of the tower is nothing amazing but it's one of those simple video effects (similar to parallax scrolling or Mode 7) which goes a long way. Tower Toppler is a pretty fun game but it's hard and got stale after a while. You have three chances to clear a tower in one go. After that it's back to tower one.

I managed to complete one tower after about 30 minutes and I feel pretty good about that. I might complete this on the NES at some point as it looks a bit easier.

The bonus stage is very cool looking its basically a side scrolling SHMUP where you shoot at shrimp-looking things within your little froggy submarine and then collect their dropped item for time bonus on the next level. (which means you gotta basically complete it on the first go or not at all!)
