Dig Dug is a 1-2 player arcade game in which you have to use your shovel to dig your way through the earth. Stopping you from doing this are two monsters, called Pooka and Fygar, who will continually chase you around. The only weapon that you carry is an air pump, which you can use to inflate the monsters to the point where they explode. (if you start to inflate them but stop doing so, the monsters will get turned back to their normal selves). Furthermore, rocks are scattered throughout the earth, and you can use these rocks to squash them. If the monsters do not find you for several seconds, they will eventually get turned into ghosts, which are able to walk through the earth. They are invincible and cannot be killed. From time to time, vegetables will appear in the center, and you can get these for points. Read less

Played for about 30 min to get to round 35, where I was already getting bored. I may have played this back in the day but it was a little before my time. For a while I thought letting the last enemy escape was a loss. The difficulty ramped up fairly quickly and I felt winning in the later rounds was more about luck than anything else. I save state scummed while trying out different moves. In general I found it best to dig a vertical shaft and kill enemies as they approached. Often victory came in seconds. Other times I had to make careful moves since the enemies were faster than my guy that far into the game. It was useful to dig another tunnel with a thin wall in between as he could attack through the thin wall and it seemed to confuse the enemies. The game was too simple to be very interesting though. Only 2 enemy types and the stages repeated after round 12.

Tough to rate since I didn't particularly enjoy it but I am sure it was good for its time.

6.0/10 I guess

An arcade that remains quite fresh even if we ignore the decades it has behind, thanks surely to its carefree and colorful artistic section.
