R-Type Leo is a horizontally scrolling shooter arcade game. It is a spin-off of the R-Type series and the last entry to be released in Arcades. R-Type Leo was initially an original shoot 'em up game in development by Nanao before Irem retooled it into an R-Type project instead. It is also the first R-Type game to feature simultaneous two player gameplay.

I don’t usually really like most of the R-Type games, but this one, which was originally not even intended to be an R-Type game, is pretty enjoyable for me. For most of the game it hits a good difficulty balance that shines when it uses moving obstacles to create interesting movement and positioning challenges. It doesn’t overall feel as punishing as other games in the series, though like many shmups, the final level and boss are a bit too over-the-top hard for me to want to even consider trying to clear the game in one credit. It’s still a cool game all the way through though with some good visuals and music.
