Cosmic Cop, known in Japan as Armed Police Unit Gallop, is a shooter arcade game developed and released by Irem in 1991, running upon the Irem M-84 arcade board. While not directly based on the R-Type series, it is considered a spin-off of such, with many features being adapted into later games, notably R-Type Final.

Pretty Good Shmup

Preliminary: Welp at first I was thinking just 2 star and move on, just not really in a shmup mood. The background is undeniably great with the cyberpunk vibe and it's got tight arcade controls. I don't like that laser is limited and that it's one hit kills. But then I read about the night I played this on the arcade machine with my family, so then I figured it was worth giving a more earnest try. And next thing I know I was through the first level and beat the first boss. It was challenging but reasonable (we'll see if it stays that way) and obviously quite beautiful and good Sound too. I suppose it may be worth 3 stars, btu I will return to it tomorrow. My biggest hesitation is that a shmup is like a brawler to me right now. They had their heyday and now it just feels like there are so many. What makes this one unique you know? Luckily the background is great. But playing as a cop in the future isn't necessarily a selling point for me heh. Well, playing as a cop in any time... But the nostalgia for that night may help ;)

(Oh wow there are only 5 levels apparently? This'll be quick) I also like that you can shoot away enemy projectiles and that you can control the speed of the scrolling. The one hit kills are still bogging it down for me tho. Ok ok for real stopping for now and will return tomorrow.

Day 2

Nice 2nd boss/level done, possibly would be up to all 5 but thinking just 3 and call it a 3 star. Thing is, it's a great shmup, but I need something particularly innovative or spectacular for a shmup to keep me for the whole game in 91. What with Link to the Past coming out later this year!

Great between-level music. Pro-tip: don't be afraid to use your laser and just let it recharge.

Welp, it was near the end of the 3rd stage that I decided to call it quits. Good stuff but the one hit kills are too much for mid and late game to be enjoyable. The rating is helped by the good Look and fact I have access to it on an arcade machine.

Look: 8/10 Nothing spectacular but good arcade shmup stuff

Sound: 8/10 same as above

Play: 7/10 A good shmup. Would benefit from ways to prevent the one hit kills.

Feel: 7.5/10 A good game, just a genre I don't get into as much as action-adventures and platformers

Attachment: 7.5/10 Could see myself returning to this on the arcade machine. Otherwise not so much.

Overall: 7.6/10

Completion: Through most of Stage 3

Proud to say I got really far in this on a first play attempt. My brother and stepdad tried it out and were so overwhelmed. I was joking how I've been playing a lot of 80s games, so I know how to manage the utter chaos that ensued lol. Will have to give it a proper playthrough once I'm in …

Proud to say I got really far in this on a first play attempt. My brother and stepdad tried it out and were so overwhelmed. I was joking how I've been playing a lot of 80s games, so I know how to manage the utter chaos that ensued lol. Will have to give it a proper playthrough once I'm in this year, but already have a fond memory of playing it with family on the arcade machine. (It's on the machine as Gallop)
