giopep's review of Todd's Adventures in Slime World

In 2022, Todd's Adventure in Slime World is really hard, a bit clumsy, quite hard to play. But once you get used to it, it still is a really entertaining arcade adventure, full of ideas, with a fascinating design, and huge.

In 1990, this thing on a portable console was simply astonishing. You can see it now contextualizing it in the time period, sure, but I also remember how amazing it was back then, even though I barely played it. Also, eight players co-op was a blast, I'm sure.

Solid little Metroidvania game

Platform:

Lynx version.

Graphics:

The graphics are nice, everything is animated and oozing. I like how for example the life meter is not an interface element but the main character changes its appearance with lower health.

Gameplay:

It's a platformer but it doesn't just copy from others, there are some unique ideas here. I like how the character can climb the slimy walls. There is no useless collection mechanism of some random point item. All the items have a function and you can pick them up actively. The water pools for cleaning yourself are also a neat idea, and it works pretty well.

Difficulty:

There are no one hit deaths, and as mentioned you can "refill" your health in pools of water so the difficulty is pretty easy. The challenge mostly lies in finding your way through the maze.

Conclusion:

I can recommend this game to everyone that likes to see new ideas in games. I know, I didn't experience the full potential of it because I only played in single player. But still it's an enjoyable little game, takes up no more than an hour I think but it's still cool.
