The Super Nintendo is one of my favorite consoles of all time, but of the 16-bit gen consoles, it is easily the worst one for the "shmup" genre.

Nintendo focused on graphics and sound over processing power with the Super NES, and that is very obvious, in particular with early SNES games like this one. The amount of slowdown just gets old after a while.

It's not a bad game, but if you love R-Type, I'd say pick up the collection instead for modern consoles, or check out the Genesis or Turbografx-16 versions of the game, which are far better consoles for "shmup" style games.

Beat on easy. There seemed to be no way to increase the difficulty but the game was still very difficult. Early on I liked using the charge up shot to destroy enemies that were immune to the basic shot but this was not needed later on with missiles. Beat on easy. There seemed to be no way to increase the difficulty but the game was still very difficult. Early on I liked using the charge up shot to destroy enemies that were immune to the basic shot but this was not needed later on with missiles. I tried out most of the weapons and settled on the bouncy laser for the later game; I remember preferring it in r type 3. I liked the ability to detach the weapons system but preferred it on the front for high firepower and blocking. I also liked shooting it into the face of bosses. Sometimes I put it on the rear if needed.

The level design was a bit annoying with platforming like elements but not as bad as r type 3. I hated one of the early bosses, whose weak point would pop out and only take a single hit while you have to dodge indestructible worms. Real exciting.
