While there isn't any big innovation over the previous entries, the game manages to feel more badass and grander in scale. Those glorious 16 bit graphics have aged like a fine wine. Each level is brimming with atmosphere. There's a ton of variety in enemy types, bosses, and gameplay. It's challenging, but fair which will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The controls feel as smooth as ever, which is important given how brutal the game's difficulty can be.
They make plenty of tasteful references to the first game. The first part of the final level is basically the final level to the first game. This would have been a bit disappointing if the last level from the first game wasn't so awesome and they didn't add multiple new bosses you have to blast through. Ultimately this is a perfect sequel.
I suppose one gripe I have is with the final boss. I couldn't figure out how to deal with some of his attack patterns. Particularly the stones that slinky across the screen. I have no idea how to avoid it... to beat the final boss I had to basically avoid activating this attack …

Finally playing with a friend only makes it more enjoyable.
The action is always fast and furious. The game really plays like a 80s big budget Hollywood film, with huge set-pieces happening almost constantly. The controls in Contra III: The Alien Wars are perfection. The players are very manoeuvrable and can hang on to railings, grapple up walls, dual wield weapons and somersault through the air to avoid oncoming attacks.
The visuals work really well in this game. The detail in the backdrops is outstanding for a game of this era, the sprites still look good today and the special effects still impress. The musical score is amazing too, it becomes instantly very memorable and the tension really builds up during boss fights.
Some newcomers to this game may be intimidated by the difficulty level; the action is fast and frantic and your reactions will be really put to the test. Don’t be ashamed to set the player lives count to 7 and put the settings to easy if you are finding the going too tough.
It is lots of fun playing solo but it shines even more brightly when playing two player co-op. Highly recommended.
Good game! Currently going for a world record on any% normal and it's made me both like this game more and less. There's a lot of randomness in this which ensures the game doesn't get stale as you die over and over, and is also very short. To compensate, it's jam-packed with boss fights and tense sequences where you die if you get hit a single time, and I think that's the main complaint about this game. It's definitely possible though, it took me about 6 hours to beat on Normal without knowing anything about the game beforehand (7 lives). In short, if you want a really hard experience that rewards good execution and fast reactions, this is a great game for that. I recommend.
As a sequel in the iconic Contra series, it delivers intense gameplay, responsive controls, and a relentless challenge that quickly earned it a reputation as one of the toughest games on the system. The game features a mix of side-scrolling and top-down levels, showcasing the SNES’s capabilities with slick visuals and impressive Mode 7 effects. Though while I'm not a fan of the top-down levels, I can totally see this as something that would blow away people's minds back in the day.
The boss fights are frequent and memorable, often filling the screen with bullets, explosions, and monstrous enemies. The ability to carry and switch between two weapons adds strategic depth, encouraging players to adapt quickly in the heat of battle, and there is not a single weapon that is worth skipping, all of them are very fun to play with. But where this title really shines in coop, as previous titles did, unfortunately this was not how I played it though. The soundtrack and sound effects complement the action perfectly, adding to the game's intense, sci-fi atmosphere.

What also stands out is the game’s pacing and structure, stages are short enough not to get repetitive, yet each one introduces a new mechanic, enemy pattern, or environmental hazard to keep it dynamic. Whether it’s scaling walls under constant fire or reacting to sudden perspective shifts, it demands focus at all times. This tight design helps balance the brutal difficulty, making deaths feel like a lesson rather than cheap punishment. With practice, runs become smoother, and that sense of mastery is incredibly satisfying.
Overall, this Contra entry feels like a culmination of everything the series had refined up to that point. It’s hard, visually striking, and mechanically sharp, rewarding quick reflexes and memorization without losing its arcade roots. Even playing solo, it remains a thrilling and exhausting ride, and it’s easy to imagine how much more chaotic and fun it becomes with a second player. Decades later, it still holds up as one of the finest action games on the SNES and a benchmark for run-and-gun design.
Contra the alien wars is a 1995 gun, platform and shoot 'em up game.Factor 5, the producer of the game, and Konami, the distributor, have done a great job.The gameplay is as follows.in this game consisting of 5 sections, you are trying to kill the creatures and pass the section. The music of the game is beautiful. If you are not too obsessed with graphics and you like retro games, this game is for you.My rating for the game: 10/10 (y) Good games to everyone 🙂
4.5 stars (filler to make the review 10 words here)
1001 Games - #219
Pros: responsive controls, top-down sections are a welcome break from run-and-gun sections, ability to switch between guns
Cons: unforgiving difficulty (even on easy), shorter than its predecessors
Recommendation: Contra III is an excellent run-and-gun game, much like Metal Slug in my opinion. Although short, the difficulty of the game will make it a challenge to get through all six stages, even on the easiest difficulty. Of note, the Konami Code has no effect in this game.
CONTRA III THE ALIEN WARS REVIEW: (SNES)
Contra III the alien Wars is a 1992 run-and-gun game.Konami, the producer and distributor of the game, have done a great job.The story of the game is as follows.Set in the futuristic year 2636 AD, the alien invaders defeated during the previous installments have decided to start a full-scale war against humanity on Earth, starting the "alien Wars". Unlike previous Contra games for the Nes and Game Boy, the futuristic setting was kept for the American version. However, the identities of the original Contra heroes, Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, were changed to their "descendants" Jimbo and Sully, maintaining the continuity of the previous localizations. Likewise, the alien invader was once again renamed the "red Hawk".The gameplay is as follows.in this game consisting of 6 sections, you are trying to kill the creatures and pass the section. The music of the game is beautiful. If you are not too obsessed with graphics and you like retro games, this game is for you.My rating for the game: 10/10 (y) Good games to everyone 🙂
Beat on normal years ago and beat on normal again. I used the H homing missiles and the C missile. The H is all around awesome while the huge damage of the C balances out the low damage of H. I liked the tactical aspect of switching between 2 weapons and only losing the 1 you have selected on death. I also liked the top down gameplay better and it is a shame that the game did not do more with that. Good game overall though some of it is absurdly difficult.
Buenos gráficos, un diseño irregular y final bosses extremadamente difíciles.
