Castlevania Dominus Collection

This collection was a nice excuse to replay these games again. I don't think the enhancements are mind-blowing, but it's nice to have these easily accessible without needing to play them on a handheld. I still think they're worth playing in 2025, but I might be biased. In my memory, I put all of these games at around the same …

I don't think the enhancements are mind-blowing, but it's nice to have these easily accessible without needing to play them on a handheld. I still think they're worth playing in 2025, but I might be biased. In my memory, I put all of these games at around the same level, but after replaying them, I think my order from favorite to least favorite would be Portrait of Ruin > Order of Ecclesia > Dawn of Sorrow. In my mind, this is the last of the metroidvania style Castlevania games so it's a bit bittersweet being done with them again. I know Mirrors of Fate exists, but in my mind it won't feel the same.

Don't have time for the actual DS trilogy just yet but had to check out Haunted Castle Revisited since that is such a bonkers thing to exist in the first place. I'm very positively surprised. It's short, it's simple but it's basically a new old-school Castlevania in 2024.

I think it follows the original Haunted Castle somewhat closely in it's levels (haven't gotten far in the original) but other than that, everything has been remade. For one, it's actually of a playable difficulty. Secondly, the gameplay just has this nice snappy feel to it when sowing destruction with a whip. Haunted Castle Revisited also nails the aesthethic: it looks chunky and kooky like the original but with a lot more detailed 2D graphics.

For a standalone game, this would be fun but a tad too short, and there isn't much incentives to play this over and over either (there's three difficulty levels and a score tally without rankings). As an extra, though, this is coolness overkill.

This came to me at the right time. I don't really like emulating DS games on the Switch (Bowser's Inside Story is a weird exception though) with the orientations not being for me since they didn't fill the screen or did so but not in a way I like. I played a bit of Portrait of Ruin on it and …

This came to me at the right time. I don't really like emulating DS games on the Switch (Bowser's Inside Story is a weird exception though) with the orientations not being for me since they didn't fill the screen or did so but not in a way I like. I played a bit of Portrait of Ruin on it and playing it this way was not for me. But I did play through almost all of Dawn of Sorrow on PC just 2 weeks ago. (Didn't come back to beat the final boss), while I really liked it, I wanted to play it portably like I did the GBA games. This version seems to walk that line for me to get it. Anyways, bring Castlevania: Requiem to the Switch please.
