This Castlevania is one of the defining entries of the GBA era of the series, continuing the exploration-heavy formula popularized by SOTN. The MC is called Juste Belmont, navigating a mysterious castle in search of a kidnapped friend. The premise is simple, but it sets the stage for a familiar loop of exploration, combat, and gradual character progression that is nothing new to this franchise at this point. Although it has a lot of restrains due to its limited platform, it still tries to deliever a 1:1 experience to traditional consoles, sometimes taking itself too seriously for its own good.

One of the game’s strongest aspects is its presentation on the GBA, the visuals are unusually bright and colorful for a Castlevania title, which was a deliberate choice to compensate for the handheld’s screen limitations. Character sprites are detailed and fluidly animated, and your movement feels fast and precise, making traversal and combat satisfying on a mechanical level. The magic system, which allows you to combine spell books with sub-weapons, adds some variety and flair, even if it ultimately contributes to the game’s low difficulty. Even though this can bring a lot of depth to the combat, I decided to simply use the first ones you find, which are effective enough for the entire game.

That ease of difficulty is one of the most common criticisms, you don't even get combat challenges, which were already traditional for this franchise at this point, or even secret bosses. Compared to earlier entries, this entry is far more forgiving, with powerful abilities that can trivialize encounters and bosses that rarely require careful strategy. As a result, while the game remains fun to play, it can lack the tension and sense of accomplishment. For those looking for a challenge may find it underwhelming, especially as the game progresses.

The castle design introduces an interesting concept with its dual-layer structure, essentially presenting two overlapping versions of the same map. While this idea has potential, in practice it can become confusing and lead to excessive backtracking. And this flaw is what made my experience very frustrating, this title is by far the most demanding when it comes to backtracking. And while I tend to love this mechanic in games, it wasn't very good this time around, simply because the dual-layer structure promotes a lot of confusing, since both castles are practically the same. This implementation really needed more time in the oven, it tries very hard to replicated the SOTN experience, but it fails pretty badly.

Another frequently discussed weakness is the OST, the Castlevania franchise is known for its iconic music, but here the audio quality and compositions fall short of expectations. The GBA’s hardware limitations are partly to blame, yet even within those constraints, the music lacks the memorability and atmosphere found in other entries, making it one of the less celebrated aspects of the game. This is by far the least problematic feature of this game, and it only stands out badly due to it being compared to the rest of the franchise, which has amazing OST overall.

Despite its flaws, this game remains a solid and enjoyable title, especially for those who appreciate the series’ exploration-driven gameplay. It may not reach the same heights as the best Castlevania games, but its smooth controls, accessible design, and ambitious ideas make it a worthwhile experience, particularly for those interested in the evolution of the franchise on handheld systems. I would only recommend this if you are a die-hard fan of the metroidvania side of this franchise, and even so, I would not set its priority too high, in my opinion, this is one is on the weak side of the spectrum.

I think I would've liked this mode more if I focused on speed and knew about his hidden moves. Really no point in attacking basic enemies, but I felt compelled to fight them. It was honestly a bit bland without having new abilities, equipment, or the ability to level up in this, but he's honestly super busted.

Harmony of Dissonance seems to clearly be designed as a direct response to its predecessor, the hit-or-miss GameBoy Advance launch title, Circle of the Moon. That game was criticized for being grindy, having clunky controls and movement, and moving too much away from what made Symphony of the Night great. Accordingly, Dissonance is in some ways the game you would expect to have followed Symphony of the Night as it does everything it can to mimic that game, sometimes to a fault.

enter image description here

We control Juste, who is a light-haired pale guy who is definitely not a vampire, he's instead a descendent of Simon Belmont of Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. Coincidentally, I played Simon's Quest just before this game as I've been alternating between classic and...slightly less classic Castlevania games lately. There are some references to that game and to Simon as well as a similar structure of collecting the relics of Dracula throughout the game. I did enjoy the storyline a bit more because of that connection to a game I'd just played, but as with most games in this series, there's not that much story and what's there is not much of the focus.

enter image description here

All that said, the game still most clearly pulls from Symphony of the Night. Belmont or not, Juste looks like an Alucard cosplayer. The movement is much more fluid and the iconic afterimage effect calls back to Alucard's. There's a new magic system but it's a bit more simplified than the card system of Circle, instead adding some flavor to the usual lineup of sub-weapons based on the elemental book you have equipped. While I won't say too much, the structure of getting the true ending is somewhat similar as well.

Perhaps the worst thing it takes from its more successful sibling is a new implementation of the upside-down castle idea. However, unlike Symphony's version that presented an interesting twist on so many iconic rooms and environments you are by that point familiar with, Dissonance introduces an A and B castle accessible by using special teleportation rooms that send you to the same part of the map in the other castle. The problem here is that instead of an interesting twist on the initial environments, the A and B castles are almost exactly the same. There's no inversion and instead the backgrounds and enemies change some, that's about it. At no point in the game could I tell you about whether this or that room was in the A or B castle because there was nothing especially distinct about either castle's variations. Worse yet, the progression is based mostly on taking out a boss or obstacle in one castle, then going all the way to a teleport room so you can then backtrack back to that spot in the other castle to get a reward or new tool. This not only felt like pointless padding, but it also made it very confusing about where to go next. The game's combat is generally on the easy side, especially with the potions—which they made incredibly powerful in response to how pitifully useless potions were in Circle. But that combat difficulty is replaced by a frustratingly confusing exploration loop. I got lost for a very long time mid-game and came very close to just giving up the game. In looking online, this seems to be a pretty common experience.

enter image description here

Harmony of Dissonance is a weird game in that it delivers some on the "more of the same" you may be craving if you're a fan of Symphony of the Night, but despite a few things it adds, it doesn't really do anything interesting enough to distinguish it. Further, the structure of the exploration make it frustrating to play. I think in some ways, it's more fluid and therefore more fun than Circle of the Moon, but I think I like Circle more as its faults at least are mostly from trying something new rather than failing to do anything to innovate and very poorly imitating a safer game.

Full disclosure, I only made it halfway through Harmony of Dissonance (I had just beaten the Shadow Boss). Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this Castlevania title.

Harmony of Dissonance was so focused on what it didn't want to be that it failed to carve out it's own identity. The previous Castlevania game Circle of the Moon was deemed too difficult and too visually dark, so HoD decided tone down the difficulty to an absurd degree and make this gothic horror game as bright and colorful as possible. Harmony of Dissonance also tried to copy elements of the most popular Castlevania entry at the time, Symphony of the Night, but having a pale protagonist and two castles to explore. This would have worked great if Juste had been given an actual personality or if the map screen wasn't needlessly confusing. The game's soundtrack tries to evoke the older NES Castlevania games but unfortunately doesn't succeed and calling the game's story paper thin would be extremely generous.

Harmony of Dissonance is unfortunately a testament to wasted potential and is the third worst Castlevania title I've played. Number 2 and number 1 are Castlevania II: Simon's Quest & Castlevania: The Adventure.

Fav GBA Castlevania game, movement and fighting feels good, I love it, if you're playing it, try to play with a patch that makes the colors a bit less washed out. OST's also an high point, it's bad chiptunes but I like the compositions.

Pretty standard stuff

I feel bad for giving it three stars, but I remember almost nothing about this game. It just kind of blends in with all the other Castlevania games I've played, except that it's not as good as the ones starring Soma Cruz.

My main issue comes with the level design. The way levels are broken up makes it a pain in the butt to backtrack and explore. You don't even unlock keys and fast travel until the final phase of the game. Overall, I still had a positive experience and I think I enjoyed it more than Circle of the Moon during my replay. Next on the list is Aria of Sorrow, which I'm pretty sure is my favorite in the series.

Edit: The map could still use improvements. And I really like Juste as a character. He's just really loyal to his friends and that's admirable.

Harmony of Dissonance is a great Gameboy Advance game that does so much right. It is fun to traverse the castle, backtracking to find items is satisfying, and the combat is well thought out. I enjoyed my time playing through this game very much and loved the many bosses I faced and areas to explore. My time with this game was overall fun and I really enjoyed it, but there were some shortcomings that prevent Harmony of Dissonance from being a 5 star game.

My first issue is also one of my largest. I really wanted to have weapon variety in this game. I was spoiled by playing Symphony of the Night as a kid and wanted its version of weapon swapping. In Harmony of Dissonance, you get the whip and just the whip. You whip the whole game. Thankfully, the whip is fun and satisfying, but some variety would have been nice.

The teleportation spots are really spread out and there is a lot of time spent just running around to get to where you want to go (small gripe).

The game is easy. Really easy. I had to stop myself from using magic during boss fights because I could kill them before seeing most of their mechanics. Maybe its because I found out that the axe is OP early on, but idk magic was waaaaay too powerful. If you are in a tough spot and you want to beat it immediately, get the axe and turn on the fire spell.

The game is great! Its just that it is really easy and gets a little repetitive since you are only whipping stuff the whole time.

So far way easier than any other Castlevania game I've played, there are actually health drops and a lot of sections don't have many enemies. It's kind of jarring but it's fun getting to focus more on exploring the castle. I may complete this one soon.

This is one of those games I feel like I have to take a star off because it isn't Symphony of the Night. If SotN didn't exist, this would probably be a 5 star game in my book. Sure, the story may not be the best in some ways. It has some weak dialogue I feel like. But, by golly, I'm really enjoying replaying this one. I had this and Circle of Moon on my GBA back in the day, never beat CoM, but this one I felt was too close to SotN at the time. On replaying it, I feel more like it is its own thing, and it copies SotN only to lure you in and subvert it in innovative ways I'd never spoil since it is worth playing just to discover on your own. Replaying it now having played every Castlevania that came before it, I really can appreciate it more. Juste's character and abilities didn't make any sense to me as a kid, I thought it was just kind of a dumb Alucard rip-off but trying to be a Belmont. But seeing him inherit his magic powers from Sypha being his ancestor makes him make sense, getting the whip and subweapon powers from his Belmont blood and magic from her, and being able to combine them makes for a cool gameplay system that also calls back to the earlier games.

I’ll get the issues I had with it out of the way first but truth be told I really like this game.

Biggest and most relevant issue for me: it’s far too easy to get lost. Circle of the Moon for me was pretty open and pretty easy to get lost in but this game multiplies it by at least two or three. Somehow the upgrade that was needed to proceed was always the opposite direction of where my intuition led me; and since there’s 2 castles to explore, there’s a lot of space to check before you get back on the right track.

Beyond that though, it’s strikes an interesting balance with Circle of the Moon. Where CotM is stiff and frustrating at points, Harmony of Dissonance is a bit too easy to break and then never face a challenging part again. I was shocked to find a respawning $100 candle right outside one of the few shops. Needless to say, I farmed for maybe 3 minutes, got about 30 potions and basically never worried about dying again.

Wind+Boomerang is also kind of broken, I used it for most of the game and if it didn’t shred enemies outright, it always knocked them away so they couldn’t hit me.

So my experience was kind of relaxed and I actually enjoyed that. It meshed strangely well with the surreal atmosphere and nightmarish visuals. Where CotM emulated something in-between metroidvania and classic castlevania, this game created a uniquely atmospheric experience that I hope to see traces of when I play Aria of Sorrow.

In short: it was a joy to explore and get familiar with but somewhat of a chore to 200%. Regardless, this is a game that I’ll be remembering because of the mood it created. The improved spritework, color palette and animations didn’t go unnoticed. True to it’s name, the game also utilizes dissonance to a good effect, pushing it’s surreal tone even further. If I had to pick one or the other, I’d probably pick this over CotM, but I really like both. Can’t wait to play Aria of Sorrow

Coming from Circle of the Moon (which I was never able to beat the impossible final boss on), there are plenty of improvements.

  • Graphics are better: your character has more than 3 frames to his run animation.
  • Healing items actually exist
  • The game is not nearly as brain-dead-grindy
  • While confusing at first, this game's dual-map mechanic was actually pretty fun

It's not without its faults, though...

  • The music was a step down from Circle
  • I daresay that the big, lumbering, samey bosses in this game are maybe too easy. Almost all of them can be easily dispatched with a couple shots of electric crosses/boomerangs. And if that didn't kill them, just stand next to them and basic-attack a few times to finish the job.
  • You don't really have much chance of finding/fighting the true final boss without a cheat guide. There are specific hoops you have to jump through (requiring at least one item hidden in a not-on-the-map room) that just don't make a lot of sense.

Hauska mutta riitasointuinen

GBA:n toka Castlevania on ihan jees metroidvania, jonka pelaa mielellään läpi. Muistaakseni musiikin laatu sai kärsiä graffan ehdoilla. Grafiikat vähemmän yllättäen ovatkin vakuuttavat konsolin huomioiden.

That said, the game has other issues with balance. I found myself exclusively using the cross + wind book combo for the whole game.

Also, once I got pretty far into the game I was so strong that boss fights were easy as shit. This is problem with the other games in this series.

There weren't enough portal in my opinion. I was doing an 100% clear and I had to do SO much back tracking.

Also, the ending sucked. I did all of the endings and they were all pretty unsatisfying. The "good" ending is especially corny, but it has the actual boss fight in it.
