The biggest improvement from the first game is in the graphics. While it still maintains the same polygonal shapes as the first game, they clearly optimized the software and make it run smoother. In addition, there's plenty of swag added to the cinematics. The intro cinematic feels like something out of Star Wars.

This game nearly guts everything from the first game in favor of something unique and ambitious. Instead of picking courses and playing through linear rail shooter levels, you have a solar system map with randomly spawning enemies. Your goal is to eliminate all enemy ships and then attack Andross. Enemies can take over planets or asteroids to set up a base to launch missiles. Or large carriers can fire artillery from afar. You need to protect Corneria by destroying attacking ships/missiles. If the planet takes too much damage it's game over. And all of this happens with a timer.
It does make the moment-to-moment gameplay feel more stressful since you have to juggle and weigh where to move/defend next. While this is drastically different and ambitious, it sadly came at the cost of removing the level design of the first game. There's no longer long linear levels. Instead you have random dog fights in space or need to attack a base/carrier. The assault levels are typically pretty short and not as challenging or interesting as the first game. They do introduce more freedom in the controls where it plays closer to a 3-D shooter rather than rail shooter. The controls aren't buttery smooth but I've honestly played worst shooter controls. They give you a new mode where you turn into a walking battle chicken. This allows for easier mobility in smaller corridors which is typically necessary in the base assaults.
While I respect the devs for doing something so ambitious and radically different, I do prefer the first game.

Kiitos …
