It featured revolutionary pre-rendered 3D graphics that give the game a very unique look compared to most other games on consoles at the time. The two playable characters featured in the game are the titular character, Donkey Kong and his nephew, Diddy Kong. Together the two swing, climb, jump, swim, cartwheel, ride animals, and blast out of barrels on their way to recover their stolen bannanas from the evil King K. Rool and his Kremling army. The adventure takes you through a variety of different environments and levels that continually change up gameplay. Donkey Kong Country also provides plenty of opportunities for exploration with almost every level having a multitude of collectible, shortcuts, and hidden bonus areas. Read less

I started Tree Top Down with 99 lives and finished it with 26.

Fck that particular level.

As one of the first games I ever played I am very proud to report that about 20 years later I still suck tremendously at it.

Another DKC game beaten. Definitely not as good and DKC2 but a great game nonetheless. Onto DKC3 to Complete the series.

Never played this before. it plays okay I guess. but is a Rare technical marvel in so many ways. astounding sound and a lot of sprite animations and other tricks in certain places. The common complaints I have read are pretty valid. Connecting jumps feels a bit sloppy (doesnt help that you have two characters with different hit boxes). It …

The common complaints I have read are pretty valid. Connecting jumps feels a bit sloppy (doesnt help that you have two characters with different hit boxes). It also gets tedious. I don't particularly like the 'claymation' aesthetic that nintendo got into on the closing curve of this era (to keep up with the competition of systems produced a bit later than theirs) but i'm also not playing it on a cathode/projection tv. Jesus though if this isn't a pretty slick soundtrack that is fresh and kinda neat to hear combined with very very Super Mario World-esque type sound effects. Pretty creative overall despite its flaws. Will have to check out later releases at some point.

It sucks. This game just isn't that fun to play. The controls just feel off, and I could never tell if the apes were going to actually land on any of the ledges I needed to jump to. The levels are very simple for the most part, and enemies likewise don't have much going for them. Every now and then you get a barrel-shooting level, and those are bad. And also, you sometimes get a swimming level, and those are the worst. Bosses are bizarrely extremely easy for the most part. Also, damn was this game trying to give me a seizure at times with its blinding light effects. All in all, just not a game I care for.

All that said though, the game does have that unique look to it, even if it's not really an aesthetic that wows me personally. I've watched a video or two on the making of the game, and it is admittedly impressive what they managed to achieve within the system's capabilities. I'm paraphrasing here, but I remember a part in the book "Console Wars" which had the CEO of Nintendo looking at early footage of this game, and saying "Wow, the Nintendo 64 is coming along nicely!" And someone had to explain, actually sir, this is Rare's SNES title. This game really did push the boundaries of its day, so I'll give it credit for that. I've been told the second Country game improves the gameplay a bit, so I might give that a go some time.

Beat the game without finding all the bonus stages. I'm at around 70% at this moment. I also defeated all bosses without getting harmed with exception of the final boss. Lets see how long it takes me to find all the bonus rounds.

I'm currently playing Donkey Kong Country again. This time around, I'm aiming to complete it 100%.

One of my favorite games (alongside Mario) from when I was young. I finally played all the way through it on Virtual Console. I nearly tore my hair out.

Donkey Kong Country for SNES is missing a lot of cool content from it's GBA remake.
