While it will never have the specific nostalgia attached to it that Yoshi's Island has for me, it's as close to perfect as a retro platformer can get. Iconic, loaded with secrets and genuinely inventive. The end game levels are rage-inducingly hard, but not impossible to overcome. Wonderful stuff.

"A fan game of remarkable quality, Super Mario Bros. X combines elements of the early Mario games together in expert fashion, providing 60 levels of fun and many more stages, tilesets and playable characters available as fan creations via the included level editor. A two player co-op mode and a competitive battle mode also give it some multi-player options."

For a long time, I've thought this was a great game, but not as good as Mario 3. Having now 100%-ed Super Mario World, I'm turned around and I completely understand the hype. Many of the castle levels are lacking in checkpoints, but this game is a masterpiece and deserves the hype.

I played this game extensively back in the 90s, which obviously came with my SNES. I do not remember how much of the game I completed; I do know that I beat the star and secret worlds. I remember relying on capes and blue yoshi a lot.

This is one of the best games of all time and my favorite Mario game (I have not played most later games because I lost interest in the series, and platforming in general, at Super Mario 64). The magical fantasy open world is the game's shining star and the gameplay is simply perfect for this genre.
Update 2021
Played through again using Super Mario All Stars rom. I methodical did each level and secret exit. I ended up going from donut plains 1 to star world, unlocking bowser's castle as quick as possible, and then doing the special world. Then play through the game normally with the graphics changes. There were a few levels I had to look up as I could not remember those secret exits. Plenty of using blue Yoshi from star world 2, and getting power ups or regular Yoshi from the top secret area. Yoshi with 2 capes was the way to go. Occasionally the fire flower was useful. Still my favorite Mario game though it is easier than 3 and misses some of the features of that game.
9.5+/10

Everyone sure loves this one! I recently played through it for the first time. Everyone sure loves this one! I recently played through it for the first time. It's even easier to beat than Mario 3, but as people like to say it's more about exploring and finding hidden exits and stuff instead of just making your way through the stages. I have mixed feelings on this to be honest... I think my main issue is just that the worlds aren't interesting to explore? They all look pretty much the same. Lots of blocks to jump on, moving platforms to jump on, and the same enemies to jump on. It's fine and all I guess.
Things I do like... The sound effects are very funny. I also quite like the goofy-looking dinosaur Yoshi, though it always felt like the levels were never really designed with him in mind. (Looking forward to the Yoshi's Island game, which I assume rectifies this.) He is fun to control though, and riding around on him was always what I aimed for in each level, never really caring to find random little collectibles. I guess I'm just not a collect-a-thon gamer. Anyways, SMW is an all right game, though not one I ever got that excited about. Felt like one step forward in some ways, and one step backward in others. I'm on Team Sonic though, so what do I know? GENESIS DOES! =P

Super Mario World - Return to Dinosaur Land 4/5 superstars. Well worth playing with creative level design and steady pace of challenge. Lots of variation in maps in both visual style and play style. what are the best romhacks for this game? anyone in on that? (romhacking.net has reviews!) SMW and chrono had an endless amount of "mods" and i have collected a bunch since 199X but not played that many. Am playing a good one right now and will finish tonight. I am confirmed believer they are worthwhile now and want a playlist …

its a medicore mish mash of mario 2, 3 and SMW, creative but has flaws, fairly short. Had a few interesting dungeons similiar to haunted house.
