Gameplay departs from the series standards with excellent results. For starters, Yoshi is technically invincible; unless he falls down a pit or into lava, taking damage only causes him to lose his hold on baby Mario for a moment. Grab him quickly and everything will be fine, but if you leave him loose for too long, the forces of Bowser will swoop in and kidnap him. It's an interesting HP mechanic that plays really well. Also, while Mario is traditionally all about running and jumping and not much else, Yoshi starts with a wide range of abilities, such as hovering, eating opponents, laying and launching eggs, and stomping the ground. On top of that, you also get the usual assortment of temporary power-ups (a variety of elemental watermelons, fly-by-wire eggs, and good old invincibility stars to name a few) and a number of animal allies you can control in certain areas (a giant mole, an awesome big stupid dog, etc.). Combined with expansive level design reminiscent of SMB3 and SMW, creative boss fights, bizarre visual aesthetics (Touch Fuzzy Get Dizzy is probably the most memorable level in any game on the SNES), a solid soundtrack, and an optional (but addictive) secondary objective that you collect every collectible and beat every stage perfectly to unlock the REAL last level, you wind up with one of the best designed and most playable titles the SNES has to offer. Five stars, easy.
