This game is based entirely on the first Star Wars movie, Episode IV: A New Hope. The opening of the game features an animated cinematic of the opening scene of the film. After that the player takes control of Luke Skywalker, driving the landspeeder across Tatooine in search of R2-D2. Luke Skywalker explores various locations throughout Tatooine, fighting numerous enemies including Jawas and Stormtroopers. The game features many locations from the movie including the Chalmun's Cantina in Mos Eisley where Luke meets Han Solo for the first time. This section of the game features a classic 8-bit rendition of the "Cantina Band" theme as played by the fictitious band, Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes, in the feature film. The game also contains many famous lines from the movie including Obi-Wan Kenobi's plea to Luke to join him in his trip to Alderann and Han Solo's description of the smell from the Death Star's trash compactor. The player eventually lands on the Death Star and has to destroy the tractor beam to escape. The game also features first person segments of piloting the Millenium Falcon through that Asteroid field that was once Alderaan, and shooting down Tie Fighters in both the Millenium Falcon and an X-Wing fighter. The finale of the game features a top down view of Luke Skywalker's X-Wing flying through the Death Star trenches. After the player successfully fires a torpedo into the Death Star's exposed exhaust port, a cinematic of the Death Star exploding and Luke Skywalker being awarded a medal on Yavin IV is shown. The game featured the characters Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia, R2-D2, and C-3PO. The game however does not feature Darth Vader or Chewbacca, both of whom are major characters in the film. Read less

Beat in slow motion mode. The beginning was confusing without a map of the desert. I did 3 caves, 1 of which I left after finding a gap that was too far to jump. I figured there was a thing to find to allow further jumping. It was here that I looked up a walkthrough for the map and learned that holding down the shoot button was run for longer jumps. I did all the caves. The platforming was fairly easy and there were not many enemies but they sure hit hard. The sand people and humanoid robots or whatever had to be slowly approached with constant shooting or they would survive and kill me with contact damage. Mos Eisley had stormtroopers, bounty hunters that flew around shooting damn homing shots, and indestructible aliens in the cantina. I hated the concept of indestructible enemies. The lightsaber didn't even work on them. I used Han anyway for his higher damage, and missed 2 shields. Should have been a boss fight here.

Died in the asteroid field 1st try but made it the next time by flying towards the most clear area. The game entirely skipped the massive asteroid creature from the movie, which could have been a level. Then was the Death Star, which was a confusing maze of elevators. The tractor beam and trash monster counted as bosses I guess, but I missed Leia and it would not let me go back. I was supposed to look into the cell doors but I thought they were garbage chutes and skipped most of them. There was some ridiculous platforming involving anti gravity elevators and spikes. Don't remember the Death Star having any spikes in the movie. Should have been a boss fight Obi Wan vs Vader. Then was shooting Tie fighters from the falcon, which was incredibly difficult and took some serious save state scumming. It was fun but went on way too long for how hard it was. The gun fired in bursts so it was no good to hold the button down, and it was tough to hit the fast moving fighters and their shots. Then was the X wing level, which combined the previous shooting and asteroid levels by allowing moving away from tie shots. It was even more difficult though and took even more save state scumming. Fun but way too difficult to avoid enemy shots. Again the blasters fired in bursts and it was very easy to not be able to shoot incoming fire because of the delay between being able to shoot again. Constant full auto fire would have made these space combat levels easier but I did appreciate the extra challenge from the limited fire rate. Just wish there was more hp for my ships, or less enemy fire. The final level was a top down shooter that was more about not crashing than shooting enemies. I didn't even see the ones on ahead because this time the blasters fired full auto. The ones that came from behind were tricky because they rammed me if I stayed near the back. Had to veer off to get them to crash or fly ahead and circle around. The torpedoes went behind my ship before going forward so they might have worked, but I won soon after that.

This game started off cool with an open world, but it was too limited. There shield have been more stuff to find. The 2D platforming levels were a little too confusing without a map and there were way too many indestructible enemies. I don't know how Leia fared as a playable character but it was very cool being able to swap between the 3 characters with different health pools for each. The game didn't do enough with this concept though, and Obi Wan and Chewie should have been playable. I don't know how much more they could have fit in the the game though as the graphics and music were very high quality. Not as good as the SNES games but still good.

The game has wonderful graphics and many recognisable locations from the film are represented nicely and with variety. The music is also really well done, very hummable, and not as repetitive as many other soundtracks of the era.

Some level locations are cool. Like this cave. I like caves.

You can play as a few interchangeable characters with different weapons, but the game itself is very cryptic and has you running around like an intergalactic moron wondering where to go and what to do. Platforming is responsive enough, but very difficult at times and will have you screaming like you just caught a blaster to the nuts.

There's a SEGA Master System version that looks better but sounds worse.

A fine title from LucasArts indeed, but it will test your patience and probably hasn't aged that great looking at the full perspective. I'm sure it sold well considering its strong ip and source material, but only give this one a shot if you're a fan of NES games and/or Star Wars.

Don't force it, höhö. Use the guide, Luke.

Maybe it's nostalgia or a love for Star Wars. but I truly think Star Wars is one of the best licensed games on the NES. Yes, it's tough as nails, but they give you 10 continues and a fairly obvious place to farm lives at the beginning. It's a game that requires you to memorize a lot of the screens, but mastery is very rewarding. The ability to play as Han, Leia, or Luke, with blasters and lightsabers makes it incredible and there's a lot of variety to stages. It's also one of the only NES games which I feel actually captured a full movie of action sequences well.

I beat this years ago with save states, but trying to get all the Retro Achievements in "Hardcore" mode right now and have gotten past the first Death Star part.
