Draw boxes to claim as much screen as possible without getting in the path of the "Qix" and "Sparx". Draw slower for more points and hope that you have enough coins. Simple but very addicting!

Best Puzzle Arcade Game I've Played Yet
This review is for the Arcade version

Look: 8/10 I really like the title font, the beginning screens that help explain the game, and the use of colors for both the shading and evil psychedelic vector monster thing. enter image description here

Sound: 7/10 I kinda like the sound of reconnecting with a line, and the shading of sectors sound, but for the most part, just somewhat annoying sounds, especially the death sound (probly intentional, but not my thing to be annoyed heh).

Play: 8/10 The intro screen/menu screen--so to speak--is very informative and well-done for its time. You don't see that in enough arcade games from this time. There was no need for me to find info online thanks to that (imo). Well, I did end up doing a little research about how to have the threshold higher. I'm not sure if I will ever be able to proclaim puzzle games a favorite genre, but this is as close as it gets. Plus, it helps it has maze action elements too.

Feel: 9/10 This review is for the original 1981 arcade version from Taito, even tho I have a lot of nostalgia and playtime for the Game Boy version. This really surprised me. It's got the exciting chase feeling of …

Feel: 9/10 This review is for the original 1981 arcade version from Taito, even tho I have a lot of nostalgia and playtime for the Game Boy version. This really surprised me. It's got the exciting chase feeling of Pac-Man and Robby Roto and other Maze Action arcade games, it's got the puzzle game well-executed and percentages clearly indicated etc., plus it's got the extra advantage of nostalgia for the Game Boy version! If only the sounds were better, otherwise, this playthrough really impressed me. Ironically, when I started this chronology project, I tested this game out because it was an Old Favorite of mine; I didn't give it an earnest shot but I wasn't impressed nor in the mood for arcade games, especially puzzle arcade games. Now look at me... skipping the RPGs and loving the arcade games. Smh heh.

Attachment: 9/10 Welp, I already replayed this, committed to upping the ante of 75%. For sake of the project, not even because I got bored or tired of it which is a testament to the game, 83% was my max I got to, and I am happy with that :) Wow, really surprised I liked this so much. Maybe it's just the serotonin release after the huge drop I felt after over-hyping the 1981 original Ultima release and being disappointed :-p

It's ok, but so different that you have to try it!
This review is for the Game Boy version

Played the gameboy version. It's a fine game, there's a Mario Party game that's very similar.

At first, it looks very weird, but the idea is very simple; make squares to occupy more than a predefined percentage of the screen while avoiding enemies.

If you appreciate simplicity, this is a good one.

Review / Playthrough

History:
Another game I've never heard of, and looking at the box, don't believe I've ever seen on a shelf either.

Expectation:
Well, I don't expect to be spending much time with it. It's a puzzle game, so I'll play with it for a night and see how much there is to it. I imagine it'll be over pretty... *puts on shades*... qix.

Pre-Game Thoughts:
I'm not gonna lie, I really just want to play through this so I can get started on Batman which has been sitting, unloved, on my shelf for nearly a week now! Still hoping to be surprised though.

Night 1:

I got around to this game later in the night after a rough day, and was hoping to be able to unwind to some cool puzzle gaming. What I got instead was a harsh lesson in frustration.

Ohhh, okay.... data-verified=.>">Ohhh, okay.... >.>

It was fun learning the game actually, going from WTF do I do to how do I do it better. Still, some of the systems in the game are so obscure. The controls are odd, I have a slow button and a fast button but why would I ever use the slow one? Or …

See that? I only drew 5-6 squares, but I've done better and worse, more and fewer, and I just can't make sense of it!

By the end of the night I said I was done, I've seen the game, but thinking about it now I'm going to give it another night. I'm making it a point not to read any guides or get any info on games before I play them so as not to skew my opinion or ruin any surprises, but I think I'm going to investigate this one a bit further. One more night, after some time at GameFAQs...

Night 2:

I went back after educating myself. The scoring system now makes much more sense, I now know that moving slowly gives you double points. I know the difference between Qix, Stix and Sparx. Knowing these things did not make the game any more (or less) fun. It was a short night of Qix.

Post-Game Thoughts:
This game kinda felt like another whiff for me, to be honest. I wasn't not fun, but it's certainly not something I'm too anxious to jump in again either. Aside from novelty, I'm not sure why I'd pull this game down when I could instead play, say, Tetris.

Conclusion:
Tried to enjoy it, but it turned into a night and a half of "meh". Every time my wife walked over it was "Really? This game's on the list?"
