Gameplay is similar to the original Phantasy Star, the first game in the series. Its battle system is turn-based, allowing the player to choose commands for their party of up to four characters. Each of the eight characters has a different set of preferred weapons and armor, as well as techniques, suited to the character's job. The player must defeat enemies in the overworld and in dungeons to advance in the game.
The game abandoned the first-person view that the first game used for dungeons and battles. Phantasy Star II instead uses a top-down perspective for exploration and a third-person view in battles.

I think this game has the worst dungeons I've ever encountered in an RPG, just impossible without a guide or a map.

This game has the most absurdly entangled dungeons I've seen in my life, ugh.
BUT the graphics are great, the music is incredible and the story has pretty interesting parts. I liked the battles, too. So... good game. If you use a map.

The game honestly would get 2 stars, but the plot is so good, especially for the time that I have to bump it up to 3 stars. There are clunky dungeons and uneven battle difficulty. However, the plot sold me on this one. The cutscenes are also excellent for the time and would pave the way for future Phantasy Star …
