Unlike previous outings, Super Fantasy Zone was handled entirely by Sunsoft (under license from Sega), who had previously brought Fantasy Zone and Fantasy Zone II to the Nintendo Famicom. I'm something of a Fantasy Zone fan (gotta love Opa-Opa), and this entry for the MegaDrive (Genesis) is likely the best entry in the series (either that or the arcade original). It's Defender-style shooting, but in very cute and colorful alien worlds (and with catchy music). The main gimmick is collecting coins so that you can buy upgrades and new weapons. The weapons are on a timer, so you can't make yourself too OP for long -- but it sure feels great while you are. Just the right amount of challenge, and the bosses are memorable too.

It is currently available to play on the Switch via the Sega Genesis app if you have the Online Expansion Pack. Well-worth checking out IMO, a 16-bit classic. It is also included on the Sega Genesis Mini console, if you happen to have that.

Super colourful and with a addictive sountrack, this maniac shooter is a beautiful experience to play. It is an innovative shooter that allows you to travel both right and left. The power ups are bought at the begining of the level and should be used with care.

Bosses are imaginative and quite challenging.

This "happy shooter" shouldn't be overlook, because it is very challenging and demanding.

A must play for any shooter lover!
