In the game, players fly a F-14 Tomcat jet fighter, gunning down enemies while avoiding incoming fire. Like OutRun, another Sega arcade game, After Burner II came in several versions, the most famous being a large, servo actuated, sit-down cabinet which resembled a cockpit and moved according to the motion of the plane onscreen. The cockpit would bank in the same direction the on-screen aircraft was banking. There was also a more basic upright cabinet version. Read less

Final Thoughts: For an arcade game made in the 80s, this game is a major technical marvel like OutRun. The graphics are pretty and smooth for its time, and the music composition Is simply one of the bests I've heard from that time period. The Afterburner -Climax- theme is one of my favorite arcade songs ever and it's even neat that it makes cameo apperances in other franchises especially Bayonetta and even Smash Bros.

Unlike OutRun, this game has not aged well mechanically and is nearly impossible to play today. There's almost no way to dodge incoming missiles unless you pre-memorize the patterns, because they are impossible to see with both the camera framing and how frantic the action is. I can't even imagine how people beat this back in the day.
