Kingdom Grand Prix is a vertically scrolling shooter/racing hybrid arcade game created by Eighting/Raizing, it was later ported to the Sega Saturn. It is the second in the Mahou Daisakusen series, but the first to include the bizarre but original feature of being a shooter/racing hybrid.

Cute and charming, but flying too high

I'm enamored with the presentation of this ambitious arcade hybrid of racing and shoot em' ups more than anything. The spritework, character design, music, and audio cues all ooze a sort of charm and personality that I often associate with the most stylish of early 90s media and games.

The game has a unique premise of trying to marry the core 2D ship shoot em up genre with racing to the end of the stage against competing ships. The racing component feels mostly tacked on however, and the Saturn port even allows you to play purely in shooting mode which feels a lot less stressful while still learning the game.

It is still great fun to gradually learn the stages/bosses and differences between characters you can play, it's just a shame they weren't able to better merge these two disparate genres into something more cohesive.
