Just Say No (To this Game)
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

enter image description here This game is a great example of why steam reviews really cannot ever be trusted. In no way is this a 7 out of 10 game! In fact it BARELY misses a 1 star rating from me (a harsh judgement which I reserve only for the most heinous of felons!)

enter image description hereYou just haven't found your strain yet man.

I was not expecting much out of this game but I thought it might be a neat idea and go in an interesting place. Ignoring the bugs the weird crashes, the fact its black screen on launch (fixable by holding down CRTL+I and pressing enter on the shortcut to force a proper resolution each time) This game has a bad design and is not rehabilitative. It commits many crimes against a player, roping them in and seducing them with gorgeous artwork and a dope trip hop/lounge sountrack that is really quite good, but only to dissapoint them with what is a complete waste of time investment. If you look at this game and think it might sound quite worth trying, well let me tell you friend.. Just say no to Weedcraft Inc!

Weedcraft inc is a deceptive little lie that looks slick and on point like a really cool management simulation and business sim, with its alternative theme, (and if it was that? Well that would be awesome!) but it's just not that at all. It's a very rigid on rails cookie clicker game that is not really open. You go from one narrative driven assignment to the next. The game lets you get 'distracted' and sidetracked. You can grow whatever you want or do a bunch of incessant little things that are really just time wasting activities that do not improve your business. This is the main problem, because as you spend time doing these things, you sort of expect it to pay off.

enter image description hereCrime never pays, but being buddy-buddy with the cops to learn what they are about and to have them look the other way sure does!

The game is strange in how they managed to design it so that you can actually never really scale out. If you make more money? Your competitors will show up to take a shot at your work, or you'll have a disaster. Level up an employee and actually get more done? Your employees will just want more money, (and its really a LOT by level 3) actually making them more of a liability than an asset. Playing it for about TWELVE hours, i began to realize something was up under the hood that was kicking me back so i just stopped fighting the competittion, the financial impact of doing this wasnt even noticable!

Weedcraft is technically a business management simulation game, but its a strange one. its about keeping and cobbling everything together that is just about to bust each month. sending minions to do dirty deeds to flush out competition that for no reason will just show up next month anyway. hard work doesnt really have a reward becaus you are just greeted with more setbacks, and every bit of growth just raises your expenses.

the one thing that is kinda neat about this game is the conversations you can have with your employees, rival dealers, and your own employees. the more you chat over time the more you get to actually know what their interests are. You can use this to your advantage in different ways. It's a novel approach to NPC interaction because you don't just chat out a person once and say goodbye. You revisit them time to time and actually get to know them (and by get to know I mean manipulate absolutely everyone around you only to betray them in the end)

Perhaps this is the one aspect of Weedcraft it really got right and did manage to simulate was this manipulative behavior that is all too common in this element. Some cops cannot be bought but they can be blackmailed by learning about them. (Learning how Officer Hardass was wronged by his fellows and of his plot for revenge then threatening to expose him was indeed great fun, when said Officer was responsible for me clicking a lot of annoying shit, the satisfaction of him literally 'leaving town because he couldn't take it anymore' was really satisfying!) Other than that this is just a clicker game for people who want to dabble and dicker with the plants for little reason other than they like the notion of doing so. If that's your thing you will enjoy the game. It's a bit like a PC building simulator for weed enthusiasts wit hthe added bonus of talking to NPCs, but with the setback of not being open and lacking a sandbox. Seriously, "Just say No!"

zadrotimus's review of Weedcraft Inc
