Another frustrating one. There's some good to be found here but it's too sporadic. The potshotting enemy spam becomes tedious very quickly; the driving-centric levels are actively miserable, and most levels in general are stretched to breaking point with their bloated length. Another frustrating one. There's some good to be found here but it's too sporadic. The potshotting enemy spam becomes tedious very quickly; the driving-centric levels are actively miserable, and most levels in general are stretched to breaking point with their bloated length. At its best, as in Ravenholm, it feels meticulously designed and a lot of fun. At its worst, as in Water Hazard, it's a tedious slog.
On the plus side, the weapons are all great to use, especially the shotgun and the Gravity Gun; it's so rewarding to see a grenade come hurtling toward you and think, 'Ooh, I can throw it right back at them.' Obviously, for 2004, this was revolutionary, and I'm not going to ignore that, but when the game is at its weakest it feels like a tech demo coming apart at the seams. And maybe I'm just being impatient but the cutscenes (still being able to move around doesn't stop them from being cutscenes) feel like they go on forever.
Either way: I'm glad I tried it, even though I came very close to giving up after Water Hazard.
Played as part of the Millennium Challenge 2026 (2004).
