Half-Life 2: Episode One is the first of a planned trilogy of expansion packs/episodes for the 2004 first-person shooter game, Half-Life 2. The episode takes place immediately after the end of Half-Life 2, in the war-torn setting of City 17. The player is forced to deal with the effects of their actions during the main game. The episode is a stand-alone game; while a continuation of Half-Life 2, it does not require the original game to be installed or registered to a user's Steam account to play. It takes advantage of several major upgrades to the Source engine since the release of Half-Life 2, primarily its high dynamic range rendering capabilities and the upgraded facial animation system. Episode One was released together with Half-Life Deathmatch: Source, a port of the original Half-Life's multiplayer, which doubles as Episode One's multiplayer component. The retail copies of Episode One also come with Half-Life 2 Deathmatch for those who have not previously purchased the later title. Read less

Fuck, stalkers are probably one of the most horrifying things in gaming. And they are worse in VR.

Same great gameplay of HL2, but a bit lacking in content. While I understand it's just an expansion, I wish there was a little more to it.

Beat on Hard sometime around 2008. Beat again on Hard in 2020 right on the tail of the base game. I failed several times on the elevator section where you have to use energy balls to deflect falling debris or die. That part pissed me off because there is not enough margin for error. The gravity gun is hard enough to aim as it is and the debris tends to bounce off the walls and hit the elevator anyway. I got Alyx killed once when I wanted to fall back to a better tactical position and she did not feel the need.

This is the weaker of the 2 expansions but still the same masterpiece quality as the base game while implementing new enemies and puzzles. Alyx got in my way sometimes but it was not nearly as annoying as the squad mates from the later part of the base game.

I thoroughly enjoyed this expansion (if I can call it that). My main problem with it is that it was very short (it took me 3 hours and 15 minutes to beat it on the hardest difficulty). However, that also means that the repetitiveness is kept at a minimum. It's basically a progression of different sections that combine gameplay elements such as combat, platforming and light puzzling, managing to introduce something fresh (or at least different enough in order to keep it interesting) each time.

It's also the fact that the story has such a sense of urgency that added to the overall enjoyment of the game. And truth be told, Alex is probabil the best AI controlled companion I've seen in a linear single-player game. Her shots actually hit and cause damage and her personality is great. I especially liked the lame jokes and puns as well as the most-of-the-time witty remarks.

All in all I feel like this series is amazing and holds up to today's standards, even surpassing them sometimes. Having played the original Half-Life to death as a child, it's a great feeling to finally add the second title to my "finished" shelve. Now it's time to catalogue episode 1 as finished and proceed to the second one. It'll soon be time to join the whining crowd that's still begging for Half-Life 3.
