This felt like a proof of concept for the next game more than a fully realized standalone, a demo to test the mechanics. I felt the puzzle design had a narrow scope and most of them lacked creativity or complexity until the very end of an already short game, something about it felt like I was watching someone pitch a great movie idea to a studio rather than watching a great movie.
Portal 2 is one of my favorite games so I'll always have reverence for Portal, but I didn't enjoy my brief time with it.
The unexpected bundle game that spawned a massive cult following. Portal offers slick puzzle gameplay and tops it off with a memorable voice performance from Ellen McLain.
F A N T A S T I C! It a 2007 game with a unbelievable gameplay (as all source valve plataform).
A lot of concerns about details, the story is a mind blowing and the final: simple fantastic.
A very short but a true funny game. The mechanics of portals, the complex of the puzzles. Everything is so funny and enjoyable. To makes unforgettabale: A song and a Cake!
Short but unique. That is all I wrote.
Actual Score: 4.5/5
Great game. A classic puzzle game with a unique concept (a gun that lets you create two portals that you can then walk through) and some amazing and entertaining dialogue that has since become iconic (the cake is a lie). I don't even like puzzle games and this one hooked me. The portal gun is a unique concept that I really can't believe nobody thought of before. The puzzles are well thought out and cleverly designed to take advantage of this mechanic. And that's not even to mention the best thing about this game: GLaDOS.
GLaDOS is great for soo many reasons. First off, you don't even realize she's your enemy until near the end of the game. I mean, she obviously has some serious emotional issues but you still think she's (more or less) on your team, for all that she doesn't actually care about your life so much as the mission's success. But what I really love is how little the reveal of her desire to kill you actually changes her character. Evil GLaDOS is exactly the same person as "good" GLaDOS, except that she's openly trying to kill you. And it says a lot about how untrustworthy …

Evil GLaDOS is exactly the same person as "good" GLaDOS, except that she's openly trying to kill you. And it says a lot about how untrustworthy a narrator GLaDOS was until that point that this doesn't actually come as a great surprise, despite how shocking the actual moment is. She's basically like that evil ex who tried to control your life but who you obviously didn't realize was psycho, despite all the warning signs, until too late. But all that wouldn't matter at all if she wasn't so funny. From her blatantly obvious lies to her immense pettiness and irrational behavior, GLaDOS is a true joy to observe.
This game was fun :) Smart, machines talking to you were very funny. It was maybe too short, but I can get that long game like this would have hard time to catch my attention further. So its a yes from me :)
What a great game. Its a classic, and top shelf tier material.
The game has some real charm. It starts by putting you in a room, slowly as you figure out the controls, you find your way outside. The ominous voice that seems to boom throughout the facility has real personality. The way it makes light of your life and your health is always good for a chuckle. GLaDOS is her name.
The ending was pretty touching, and I wasn't prepared for how much I was enjoying myself until it was all over. The game is surprisingly short and the puzzles are pretty challenging. Not very many games have puzzles of this quality or magnitude.
Great game, try it if you haven't already.
I played this game because of how much hype it gets and how high its rating is, I was very disappointed sadly
The cake is a lie. Un clásico en los juegos de puzzles que se ha ganado un hueco en el imaginario de este submundo. Ojalá algún día un juego de Rick y Morty con esta mecánica.
Portal is one of my favourite games of all time - and on replay for the first time in nearly ten years, I have to say it's definitely still up there with the best of them.
I smashed through the test chambers much more quickly this time around, as there's not a lot of challenge in it once you've mastered the physics and tricks of the portal gun. Still, I had a ball, and the passive aggressive and murderously deranged GLaDOS is one of my all time favourite game villans.
Portal will always have a special place in my heart. It came as a freebie when Steam was released for Mac back in 2010 and helped drag me back from the consoles and back into the world of PC gaming, and while I ditched the Macbook years ago, Portal will always be the first game in my steam library. That ever expanding, vacuum of money spent on games I've never played.... facepalm
It 100% shows how they used the nintendoesque way of designing a game, where gameplay is first, and then they added everything else. And Valve has a very particular way of telling the story and lore, giving you tidbits here and there, never too in your face kind of information, so world storytelling is great. Falls a bit on the short side on the spectrum of videogames, being a two hour long one, but that's not bad.
I wish I didn't like it as much as I do.
It's just so well structured, the story unobtrusive but interesting, the puzzles strong but not impossible.
The minimal graphics mean it will hold up visually for awhile still, and though I don't remember anything from the soundtrack the overall atmosphere (kind of claustrophobic, kind of open) is enough to leave a pleasantly unsettled feeling.
Just as I said, I played Portal 2 first and after finishing it i really wanted to backstory of the protagonist and Glados, but it was very, very slow and not really good for me. I strongly suggest you play it first in order to enjoy Portal series.
This game is definately overrated., however it's still a great game. The fundamental mechanics of the game are fantastic and really innovative but the game is incredibly short. I think the inclusion of a map editor would have made this game a lot better.
Portal was true innovation when it came out, I had never seen any game like it. In the beginning levels are really easy, so people can understand the concept of portals I guess. But later the game picks up, and in the later chambers I actually got stuck a couple of times. The ending is also action packed and satisfying. Its a short game but well worth your time.
Just did my yearly replay of Portal... with RTX. Newly bought a 4070 Super so great opportunity to test it. As good as ever! Visuals were amazing.
This is very sad news.
Valve request takes down Portal 64 due to concerns over Nintendo involvement
I've finally started playing this after hearing about it forever.
I'm mostly curious about
Now THIS is a Portal modification I can get behind.

Completed the full game.
This is pretty neat! Portal ported to the N64.
Grabbed this for the Switch to give me something to play while my wife watches baseball. It's so much fun and so different from the two other great games I'm playing right now on Xbox (Elden Ring and Psychonauts 2).
A Series of My Favorite Video Game Songs with Lyrics
9. Still Alive
There aren't a ton of iconic credits songs. Basically this and Vindicated by Dashboard Confessional for Spider-Man 2.
Fun Fact- If you look up the word "vindicated" on Google, the song which is from the album "Spider-Man 2" is the second result behind the definition of the word. Wild.
Still Alive is iconic for three major reasons. First, it is very surprising that the villain of the game sings a song about the game over the credits. I can't think of any other media that does that outside of, uh, Portal 2. Second the song is very simple. I refuse to check but I am confident there are one billion covers of this on youtube. Third, the song is catchy. The first thing I did after beating Portal was watching the credits again so I could hear this song.
GLaDos may be evil, but she has pipes!
I thought this game would be too old for me to enjoy but no, the story actually makes it quite fun and now I'm kind of excited to give Portal 2 another try (I stopped playing after becoming too frustrated with a level).
When this game is on sale, it is such a must buy for the price. If even someone who is not that much into puzzle games like me enjoys it, I can barely think of anyone who wouldn't.
Seems like lately, I’ve been thinking about games more than I’ve playing them, and currently, I’m thinking about Portal 1. I am considering bumping up my score for this one a bit. I replayed recently with a more “objective” POV, and I realized how much of the game’s twists, turns and tricks were spoil to me before playing it.
Internet culture in the late ’00s/early '10s was filled with Portal references, stuff about a cake and fake news. It was everywhere, so, when I decided to play a Portal game for the first time, I started with the sequel because I knew so much about the original. Portal 2 ended up being one of my favorite games ever and a tough act to follow; playing Portal 1 after that kinda made me look down on it.
With this new “objective” perspective I can now appreciate the tightly made puzzles, the slow-burn story and gameplay. At the same time, its short length and the fact that it gives motion sickness, are points against it. I might have to play more in order to form my opinion on it, it ironically got me thinking more than its sequel.
