"A destiny tossed about, in an insane world--- A flame of life blazing forth, in a dying world--- And now, one more future that is spun--- This is the alternative ending unable to be told before: A very great, a very tiny, a very precious... Tale of love and courage." Muv-Luv Alternative continues the story of Shirogane Takeru after the events of the original Muv-Luv. This is a tale of a love so deep it breaks all barriers; about courage in the face of adversity and overcoming hardships. Epic, but takes too long to get there

Muv-Luv Alternative is the highest-rated visual novel in VNDB. It may be worth reading at some point, but there's many huge flaws that in my opinion keep it from being truly great.

  • Horribad pacing. It's often said that to fully enjoy Alternative, you have to first complete Muv-Luv Extra and Muv-Luv Unlimited. This takes dozens of hours, and for what? Some blink-and-you'll-miss-it foreshadowing amidst all the filler and becoming more "emotionally attached" when Extra becomes relevant in Alternative. Even then, Alternative doesn't become interesting until about a third or halfway through (that's maybe 15 hours), because it repeats most of Unlimited. I don't know how long it took me to finish the whole trilogy, but it could easily have been 50+ hours. There's other VNs with comparable length such as Umineko and YU-NO, but those actually have much better pacing as there is less filler and repetition and they have more unique content.
  • Unrealistic/Shallow characters. Yes, the premise is to put these silly joke characters into a nightmarish war story, but come on. Most of them can be described with a sentence or two. Miki is a moe girl with a cat theme, and Mikoto's main …

  • Unrealistic/Shallow characters. Yes, the premise is to put these silly joke characters into a nightmarish war story, but come on. Most of them can be described with a sentence or two. Miki is a moe girl with a cat theme, and Mikoto's main personality trait is that she's "bad at listening at conversations", which she apparently inherited from her father in a bad case of Shared Family Quirks. The only ones to have any real depth/development are Takeru himself, Yuuko and Meiya Mitsurugi. And even in the case of Meiya I often got the feeling that when she expressed her political views, the author was talking through her.
  • Shallow premise. Aliens attack Earth and Takeru has to save the world. The only aspects that make it stand out are the super exaggerated emotional elements and some examination of how humans would exist in such a dystopian world. But even the political elements are outdone in complexity in actual literature. (It must be noted though that the fan translation I read has been criticised and may have botched the intricacies of the plot, and the upcoming Steam version is supposedly better.) The melodrama also becomes tiresome after the 9586th instance of the authors pulling off yet another Diabolus Ex Machina or a character delivering a 10-minute motivational speech before heroically dying.
  • Miscellaneous writing problems, such as the protagonist needlessly repeating and explaining in his internal monologue scenes that the audience just saw. The exposition is very poorly integrated to the story, resulting in hour-long literal lessons on the fictional society and aliens. And other problems that I've forgotten since reading this a few years ago.

There's other, better visual novels, which have superior pacing, characters, plot (due to being more based on the characters' choices) and so on. Here's some I recommend instead:

  • Umineko (although I haven't read episodes 5-8 yet)
  • Steins;Gate
  • YU-NO
  • Katawa Shoujo
  • 999

YU-NO and Steins;Gate especially are great if you're into plot twists and melodrama.

Muv-Luv Alternative review

Rating

10/10

Mini-review

One of my favorite games and a wild fucking ride totally worth it. Amazing characters and an amazing story and setting. It's heart wrenching and extremely dramatic in a good when. Easily one of the best game stories I've ever experienced.

Recommendation

If you can take straight up reading with zero gameplay I can not recommend this more.

Additional info

Not sure how long it took but I'd estimate 70-100hrs

For You Who Depart...
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

If you are looking for a Muv-Luv (Extra/Unlimited routes) review here it is.

Anyway, moving into this sequel… As a visual novel medium fan, I can say the Muv-Luv franchise fulfilled my desires to read something that evoked emotions on me. Mission accomplished, definitely.

In this continuation from the previous entry, we get to see the darker side of this story! There’s a very clear change in tone – and I would same themes too.

The first episodes retelll the previous entry but with some additional notes, and only after some hours of reading you get to see completely new content (and even characters).

The strong points are the characters, the sci-fi elements, and in general the overall way the story develops. The political drama was also very interesting, you can see the author wanted to make a point and you might agree or not with his beliefs but he does present those in a engaging manner.

The weak points are… the music, somehow, since the score is good, but after so many hours it gets a little bit old. The pacing is a mess. I think the story as a whole needed some editing, especially the lore-oriented long …

I think the story as a whole needed some editing, especially the lore-oriented long dialogues with how robots work, some of the sci-fi explanations, and I would say some of the inner monologues from the main character too.

To sum it up – if you’re used to the anime/VN medium you will surely like the series. I would recommend people who haven’t ready a VN to start somewhere else. Definitely and improvement from the previous entry in the series. It can be a little bit... distateful sometimes, and will try (and probably succeed at) to shock you with some events, so be aware of the trigger warning (one of them is a spoiler, but I do think you should be aware of it before going into it).

Trigger warning(s): Kinda Gore-ish, Rape
