This was the first game I got for the Xbox 360, and actually purchased it before I even owned the console.
For the time of its release, Saints Row was a graphically and a more realistic clone of the Grand Theft Auto series, and was a refreshing break from the norms by the acclaimed Rockstar series.
I did enjoy the driving mechanics and car designs, again a more realistic experience than GTA at the time. Character customization was also an added perk, making the gameplay more personable to your preferences. The story wasn't really all that intriguing or anything unseen before, relying on the old tale of gang warfare and all the prospects that entails: rival gangs, drug dealing, underground racing, and corrupt police officers.
All in all, Saints Row made a name for itself and is worth a playthrough just to escape the norms of the everyday open world experience.
I was sort of expecting better when I started in on this. Gameplay is fun enough, though its not as precise as GTA. Very crude, fairly long, decent open world.
This is where the famous Saints Row franchise was born. While it may be a GTA knockoff, it managed to build its own personality, and for me, that was way better than the whole GTA experience. It connects you, it delivers a personalized experience. It makes you feel like part of something big. Even if the game was a normal gang war game (with enjoyable mechanics, storyline, characters and witty writing) the game stands apart. This was the introduction for me to what would become my favorite gaming franchise of all time.
Sure, the story and sense of humor were pretty infantile most of the time, but it was still damn funny and did a bang-up job of satirizing American pop culture and consumerism. In Saints Row, however, it all feels obligatory. Like it was something they just had to do, and the result is pretty lifeless.
This is my current Xbox game, I was not able to play this till I got my first Xbox this year, and I will say I think this game is just OK. I can see this game is a first, and Saints Row 2 definitely improved on many of what I'm finding annoying in this game. I am about to finish up the first set of main story missions (
