I slogged through this. Super old on the rails mechanics which have aged. and the fighters felt samey. was a solid star wars entry for the times though. I'm glad to put this out of my mind.

How does the enemy know i'm a recruit?

During the first mission the enemy fighters provide some colour commentary like "easy money". They also know you're a recruit... somehow? Huh?

Anyway, the game is terrible. It's a dumbed-down version of the X-Wing/TIE Fighter sims that came before it. No loadouts, no energy management, you only use ~3 keys, et cetera. I got bored during the first mission. It …

Anyway, the game is terrible. It's a dumbed-down version of the X-Wing/TIE Fighter sims that came before it. No loadouts, no energy management, you only use ~3 keys, et cetera. I got bored during the first mission. It doesn't help that your allies whine constantly as well (e.g. "where are you", "stop shooting me").

Starfighter is just one of the many lazily-made cash ins that followed the release of the prequel films. You can't even change the controls in the game itself, that's done in the launcher. In fact, the entire options menu consists of three volume sliders...
